VW Arteon ABS & Traction Sensor Failures Need Fixing

My Arteon keeps showing ABS warnings and failures, plus stored error codes. The mechanics didnt really help last time. Think its a lateral sensor issue since traction control acts weird too. Anyone dealt with similar problems on their Arteon? Running a 2017 gas model with 95000km. Need advice on reliable fixes and what to tell the mechanic this time. Getting a bit worried about safety issues with the ABS not working properly.

Summary of the thread

The conversation centers around a 2017 VW Arteon experiencing ABS and traction control failures, suspected to be caused by a faulty lateral sensor. The problem is identified as a critical safety issue, requiring immediate attention. The recommended solution involves replacing the ABS control unit and recalibrating related sensors, which should be performed by a certified workshop with VW-specific diagnostic capabilities. Following these steps, the ABS and traction control systems were restored to full functionality, ensuring vehicle safety and stability.

Had similar problems on my 2020 VW Passat 2.0 TSI. The issue requires immediate attention as ABS failures are a serious safety concern. When the vehicle stability systems started acting up, diagnostic scan revealed multiple fault codes related to the ABS control module. The steering angle sensor and lateral sensor were showing inconsistent readings, affecting the entire stability control system. The root cause turned out to be a defective ABS control unit. This is a critical component that manages not just ABS but also traction control and stability systems. A safety warning should be taken seriously, driving with malfunctioning ABS and stability control puts you at significant risk. The fix required replacing the ABS control module and recalibrating the steering angle sensors. The repair involved programming and coding the new unit to match vehicle specifications. This is not a DIY job, requires specialized diagnostic equipment and manufacturer-specific programming. Tell your mechanic to specifically check: ABS control module functionality, Lateral acceleration sensor signals, Wheel speed sensor readings, Steering angle sensor calibration, Complete system diagnostic scan Make sure to visit a workshop with VW-specific diagnostic capabilities, as generic scanners might not access all relevant data.

Thanks for the detailed explanation. My Arteon has been running fine since the repair 3 months back. The electronic control unit replacement fixed both the ABS and traction control issues completely. The diagnostic scan now shows all clear with no error codes. The steering angle sensor needed recalibration after the main fix but that seems standard procedure. Lateral sensor readings are now stable and the whole stability system works as intended. Would be helpful to know the repair costs you faced? My bill was quite hefty at 1200€ for parts and labor. Have you experienced any other electronic issues since getting it fixed?

The ABS control unit replacement on my Passat turned out to be slightly cheaper than yours at 1000€ total, including labor and the essential wheel alignment afterwards. The electronic stability system has worked flawlessly since the repair, with the lateral acceleration sensor now providing consistent readings. The diagnostic scan shows everything running perfectly, and vehicle stability systems respond exactly as they should. Like in your case, the fix was comprehensive, addressing both the faulty control unit and ensuring proper calibration of all related sensors. No recurring electronic issues in the 8 months since the repair. The stability control, ABS, and traction systems all function normally. The initial cost might seem high, but considering the safety-critical nature of these systems, it was worth the investment in proper repairs with genuine parts. Getting the electronic control unit replaced by a certified workshop using manufacturer-specific diagnostic equipment really is the only reliable solution for this type of fault. Attempting cheaper fixes or using aftermarket parts often leads to recurring problems.

Thanks everyone for the insights. After taking your advice, I went to a certified VW workshop for a proper fix. They ran a complete diagnostic scan which confirmed the ABS control unit failure. The mechanic showed me how the yaw rate measurements were completely off, affecting vehicle stability. The repair took 2 days since they had to order the control unit. Total cost came to 1200€ including parts, labor and sensor calibration. Expensive but necessary given the safety implications. The traction control and ABS are now working perfectly. The interesting part was watching them calibrate all the sensors after installing the new unit. The mechanic explained how the whole stability system needs proper alignment to work correctly. They even took it for an extended test drive to verify all systems were responding normally. Three months later and no warning lights or error codes. The investment in proper repairs at a specialized workshop definitely paid off. The car handles much better now, especially in wet conditions where you really need those safety systems working right.
