VW Arteon Air Suspension Failure, Owner's Alert

My 2019 VW Arteon is having air suspension issues that started recently. The ride height control stopped working completely, and the car is noticeably leaning to one side. The air struts seem unable to maintain proper level, and I get suspension-related error messages in the dash cluster. The headlights are also misaligned as a result. I suspect the suspension pump or compressor might be failing, but I want to be sure before heading to a workshop. Has anyone experienced similar symptoms with their Arteon? What was the actual problem and repair solution in your case? Particularly interested in repair costs and time needed for fixing it. Any insight would be greatly appreciated, especially from those who have already dealt with this specific air suspension problem.

Summary of the thread

A 2019 VW Arteon owner is experiencing air suspension issues, with the ride height control failing and the car leaning to one side. The symptoms include error messages, misaligned headlights, and a struggling noise from the suspension pump. Possible causes suggested by others include air leaks in the strut assembly or a failing compressor. The owner plans to have the system professionally checked, focusing on the struts, compressor, and connecting lines, to prevent further damage.

I had a similar malfunction with my 2017 VW Passat. Having some experience with suspension system issues, I initially thought it was the compressor failure, but it turned out to be much simpler. The main symptom was the air suspension not maintaining proper height and error messages appearing. After taking it to my regular workshop, they diagnosed a faulty wiring connection to the suspension pump. The cable had worn through due to normal movement and vibration, causing intermittent connection issues. The repair was relatively straightforward, they replaced the damaged wiring and connections, which cost 95€ including labor. The whole job took about 2 hours. However, your symptoms sound more complex than what I experienced. Could you share: When did the leaning first start? Do you hear any unusual noises from the suspension system? Does the car level itself when starting, even temporarily? Have you checked for any visible damage to air lines or components? This information would help determine if your issue is electrical like mine was, or if you might be dealing with a more serious compressor or air strut problem.

Thanks for the feedback and questions. My car has 25119km and was last serviced 3 months ago. The leaning started gradually over the past week. I do hear a struggling noise from the air suspension pump when starting the car, it sounds like its working much harder than usual but fails to level the vehicle. The car attempts to adjust the ride height at startup but cant maintain it. I did a visual check and noticed what appears to be moisture around one of the rear air struts, suggesting there might be air leaks in that area. The self-leveling feature tries to compensate but fails after a few minutes. I will get it checked professionally since it seems more serious than an electrical issue, but wanted to gather some community experience first before heading to the workshop.

Based on your description, especially the moisture around the air strut and the struggling pump noise, this definitely points to a more serious issue than the wiring problem I had with my Passat. The symptoms you describe strongly suggest air leaks in the rear strut assembly. When this happens, the suspension pump has to work overtime trying to maintain proper ride height, which explains the struggling noise. This constant strain can eventually lead to compressor failure if not addressed promptly. In my experience with subsequent air suspension issues, the moisture around the strut is a classic sign of a failing seal. The load leveling system keeps trying to compensate, but cant maintain pressure due to the leak. My repair involved: Replacing the leaking air strut: 450€, Preventive replacement of connecting lines: 120€, Labor costs: 280€ The total repair took about 5 hours. The workshop also recommended checking the suspension pump condition since it had been working excessively hard, but fortunately mine was still in good shape. You made the right call planning to get it checked soon. These issues tend to worsen quickly, and running with a faulty system can damage other suspension components.

I appreciate everyone sharing their experiences. After hearing about similar cases, I feel more confident about what might be wrong with my Arteon. The symptoms people described, especially regarding air struts and compressor issues, match my situation perfectly. The noise from the suspension pump and the moisture around the strut definitely suggest this is more than just a simple electrical problem. The estimated repair costs and timeframes shared here are helpful for budgeting, though I expect the final cost might vary depending on what exactly needs replacing. I have scheduled an appointment at a workshop for next week. Will have them check the entire air suspension system, particularly the struts, compressor, and all connecting lines. The load leveling issues and uneven ride height need fixing before they cause additional damage to other suspension components. For anyone searching the forum later with similar problems: Having moisture around air struts combined with leveling failures and pump struggling noises seems to be a clear indicator of seal failure. Getting it fixed quickly appears to be crucial to prevent more extensive damage. Thank you all for the detailed feedback. Will update this thread once I get the final diagnosis and repair completed.
