VW Taos Transmission Trouble: Gear Selector Failure Alert
Summary of the thread
A 2023 VW Taos owner reported issues with the automatic transmission, including an unresponsive gear selector, incorrect gear position display, and rough shifting with grinding noises. Error codes P0705 and P0706 indicated transmission sensor problems. A similar case with a VW Tiguan suggested a defective control unit as the cause. The solution involved replacing the control unit and recalibrating the gear shift system, which resolved the issues. The repair took 3 days and cost 1200€, with the vehicle's electronics functioning properly afterward.

Thanks for the information about the control unit. My Taos has 133204km on the odometer with the last service done just two weeks ago. The instrument panel started showing incorrect gear positions right after that service. Error codes point to transmission sensor problems, specifically P0705 and P0706. Interesting that you mention the grinding noise, mine sounds exactly as you described. The unresponsive gear shift behavior matches too, especially when cold. Good to know about the repair time and costs, helps with planning. Will get it checked this week since I dont want to risk transmission damage. Has anyone else dealt with similar automotive electronics issues on the new Taos models? The gear shift problems seem to be more common than expected.

Thanks for providing those error codes, they definitely confirm what I suspected about the transmission sensor system. The P0705 and P0706 codes match exactly what my Tiguan displayed before the repair. The timing of your issues starting after the service is interesting. On my vehicle, the electronic display problems also began shortly after routine maintenance. It turned out the technicians had inadvertently disturbed some wiring connections while doing other work. My repair actually included repinning several connectors in the gear shift assembly, beyond just replacing the control unit. The instrument panel readings became accurate again immediately after this was done. The grinding noise and rough shifting completely disappeared too. Since your mileage is higher than mine was (mine was at 95000km when the issue occurred), you might want to have them check the transmission fluid level and condition while they're diagnosing the sensor problem. The gear indicator issues can sometimes mask other developing transmission concerns. One note about my repair, the shop had to order the control unit, which added an extra day to the total repair time. You might want to check parts availability before scheduling the work.

Thanks everyone for your input about the transmission issues. Going to share my final update after getting the Taos checked at the shop. Turns out the control unit replacement fixed most problems, just like suggested. The sensor problem was causing both the incorrect gear position on the electronic display and the rough shifting. Had them check the transmission fluid too since the mileage is high, good call on that recommendation. Total repair came to 1200€ and took 3 days because they had to order parts. The instrument panel now shows correct gear positions and the shift knob moves smoothly. No more grinding noises either. The automotive electronics are all working properly again. For anyone searching the forum later with similar issues, those P0705 and P0706 codes definitely pointed to the transmission control unit. Getting it fixed early probably prevented more expensive damage. The shop confirmed these problems are showing up more frequently in newer models. Going to monitor everything for the next few weeks, but so far the transmission is working perfectly. Thanks again for helping diagnose the problem.

As someone with some experience in automotive electronics, I had a very similar issue with my 2021 VW Tiguan. The symptoms you describe match exactly what I encountered, unresponsive gear selector, incorrect gear indicator display, and rough shifting. The main problem turned out to be a defective control unit affecting the transmission electronics. The sensor problem caused incorrect readings on the electronic display, leading to those grinding noises during gear shifts. I took it to a workshop where they performed a full diagnostic. The repair involved replacing the control unit and recalibrating the entire gear shift system. Total repair time was about 2 days, and the final cost came to 1000€ including parts and labor. Since your Taos is newer, it would be helpful to know: Current mileage, When did the problem first appear, Are there any other warning lights on the dashboard, Which error codes are stored This information would help determine if your issue is identical to what I experienced. Given the similarities between our vehicles and symptoms, it sounds like you might be facing the same control unit problem. Consider having a professional diagnostic done soon, as continuing to drive with transmission issues could lead to more extensive damage.
