Xterra Overheating Speed Sensor
Summary of the thread
A 2005 Nissan Xterra was experiencing engine overheating and a check engine light, with the radiator fan not activating as expected. Initial suspicion was on the fan motor or a sensor issue. A suggestion was made to consider a defective speed sensor as a potential cause. After taking the vehicle to a shop, it was confirmed that the speed sensor was indeed defective, and the issue was resolved.

Interesting, I hadn't considered the speed sensor. I'm sitting at around 197353 km. Was your Xterra showing the same symptoms – overheating and the check engine light?

Yep, exactly the same! The engine was getting way too hot, and that darn light was on. Honestly, I'd get it checked at a workshop to be sure. I would not recommend driving for too long like this.

Thanks a lot for the advice! Took it to the shop, and it turns out you were right – defective speed sensor! Cost me about 250€ to get it sorted. Really appreciate the help!

Whoa, overheating is never good! I had something similar happen with my Xterra. Is it possible that the speed sensor is defective? What mileage do you have?
