XTrail check engine light and fuel consumption
Summary of the thread
A 2001 Nissan XTrail with a diesel engine and 204,000 km is experiencing a check engine light and increased fuel consumption. The suspected cause is a fault in the inlet VANOS mechanics, possibly due to a defect in one of the camshaft solenoid valves or a power supply issue. The problem was confirmed to be the VANOS solenoid valve, which was resolved with a repair.

Timing chain was checked recently, looks ok. Are we talking VANOS solenoid here? I read some information about BMW VANOS and it seems like a similar issue. Was it inlet camshaft-related?

Yes, it was definitely the VANOS solenoid. I'd advise getting it checked out at a workshop; it's likely the culprit.

Thanks for the tip. It was indeed the VANOS solenoid valve. Repair cost me 250€. Sorted now.

I have an XTrail, and that sounds familiar. Did you check your timing chain? Low power was another symptom I had.
