2004 Nissan Fuga Exhibiting Engine Trouble and Potential Camshaft Adjustment Fault

Valve adjustment noise

Poor fuel economy

Jerking on acceleration

Check engine light on

Unsteady engine

Loss of engine power

Metal shavings in oil

Weird engine noise

Hey all, I've got a 2004 Nissan Fuga with a gasoline engine and about 117,890 KM on the clock. Recently, it's been giving me a hard time - the check engine light is always on, she's jerky on acceleration, the engine's not steady, there's a significant drop in power and she's guzzling more fuel than usual. There's a strange valve adjustment noise and some unusual engine sounds, and to top it all off, I found metal shavings in the oil - yikes! I'm thinking I've got a faulty camshaft adjustment, but after a bad experience at the mechanic last time I wanted to gather some opinions and potential fixes before I dive in again. Anyone else have the same issues or any thoughts on what might be happening here? Would appreciate your insights and experiences with your go-to mechanic. Cheers!

Hey, just reading through your symptoms and can't help but think back to a similar situation I faced not too long ago with my 2007 Nissan Skyline. That sucker was giving me a hell of a time with almost identical engine troubles. I noticed she wasn't running smooth anymore, and my check engine light stayed stubbornly on. My mechanic I trust, told me that one of my camshaft solenoid valves was dodgy, or maybe it was a power supply glitch. Checking the solenoid valves was our first move, especially since you mentioned unusual valve adjustment noises and metal shavings in the oil (exactly what I faced). These little buggers control the flow of oil to the camshaft, so if they're shot, it could totally throw your valve timing off and cause the jerks, power loss, and excess fuel consumption you're seeing. And the engine being unsteady, that could point towards the same issue. Can't stress enough how important it is to not ignore these symptoms. It might not seem like a massive deal, but trust me, it ain't something to shake off. Neglecting it could lead to serious engine damage down the line, which nobody wants. I suggest you get your car looked at sooner rather than later, ideally by someone reliable. Best of luck with the repairs, and remember, sometimes you've got to treat the car like she treats you. Cheers!

Yo, appreciate the breakdown and advice. Sounds like you've been through the wringer with your Skyline! That solenoid valve aspect is super enlightening. Looks like I'll have to hash it out with my mechanic after all. Just for a ballpark, can you recall how much you ended up shelling out for the fix? And since that debacle, have you had to deal with any other surprises popping up? I've got my fingers crossed hoping this'll be a one-stop shop issue once it's sorted. Cheers!

Hey, no worries at all, glad to help out. Yeah, the old Skyline really put me through the mill! Regarding the cost, fixing the defective solenoid valve and sorting out the power supply issues set me back about €250. It might sound a bit steep, but believe me, it's an investment worth making for your ride's health. Since the fix, my Sky's been running smoother than ever – no nasty surprises or unwanted light shows on the dashboard. And the camshaft adjustment? Completely sorted. Not a whiff of jerkiness, power loss, or unnecessary fuel-guzzling since the mechanic had a crack at it. Here's hoping your Fuga issues get sorted in a jiffy too. Fingers crossed it’s a one and done deal for you! Cheers!

Your response is a breath of relief! Thanks a ton for putting it in perspective with your Skyline experience. Yeah, €250 might seem a bit much but then again, avoiding any long-term damage to the car would definitely outweigh that. Pretty chuffed to hear about your Skyline's recovery as well - seems like your mechanic did a cracking job! I'll take your advice and not dilly-dally around with these symptoms. Going to see my mechanic as soon as I can to get these issues settled - and hopefully have a smooth running Fuga again. Fingers crossed all goes well, will keep you posted after the showdown with my mechanico! Cheers, and take care!
