2005 Lexus LS Exhibits Poor Performance and High Fuel Consumption - Suspected Fuel Pressure Sensor Issue
Summary of the thread
A 2005 Lexus LS is experiencing poor performance, high fuel consumption, black smoke, engine light issues, delayed cold starts, jerking during acceleration, and a strong exhaust smell. The suspected cause is a faulty fuel pressure sensor. However, a similar case with a 2007 Lexus GS revealed that corroded cable connections, particularly battery and ground cables, were the issue, which were resolved with cleanup and replacement. It is suggested to check these connections first, as they might be the root cause, and to consult a reliable mechanic for further diagnosis and repair.

Hey there, thanks for chipping in! Your experience sounds eerily similar to mine. So, it was just the corroded cable connections causing the ruckus, huh? Wishful thinking, but here's hoping it's the same thing for my LS, not some complex sensor mayhem. Now, about the key question - don't mean to dig into your pockets but do you remember how much you had to shell out at your local garage for the cleanup and cable replacement? Only asking so I know what ballpark figure I should be expecting. Also, since they sorted it out for you, have any other problems popped up related? Just want to be prepared for what I might be in for. Stay safe, dude!

Hey there! Happy to share my experiences if it helps you out. I totally understand where you're coming from. The costs for fixing up the cable connections at my local garage ran me 155€. A bit steep, but in my eyes, totally worth it since it got my baby running smoothly again. As for any other problems popping up since then... luckily for me, nada! In fact, after they fixed the cables, another little issue that they found was a malfunctioning fuel pressure sensor which I had suspected earlier. They tidied that up for me, all part of the job. So if it's the same issue for your LS, that's something that could get sorted out at the same time. So, there you have it. Don't stress too much! A good mechanic will get you sorted out. Waiting to hear how things turned out for your ride. Keep us in the loop! All the best, and keep it shifted. Safe driving, dude!

Hey, cheers for such helpful insight! Sounds like a relief knowing it might not be some massive engine issue. The 155€ seems quite reasonable considering it got your GS up and running smoothly again. Your note about the mechanic eventually finding a problem with the fuel pressure sensor sure does echo my thoughts. I'll be sure to mention these details when I take my LS in. If it's something similar, that indeed would be a coincidental sigh of relief! Now, all that's left is finding a decent mechanic around here as my past experience was a total nightmare. Wish me luck on that hunt! Appreciate the suggestions and moral boost! I'll definitely update here once everything's sorted.Peace, and take care on the roads!

Hey, sounds somewhat familiar. I've got a 2007 Lexus GS. A bit ago, had this nagging issue. Similar symptoms and everything - the inexplicable jerking on acceleration, odious exhaust smell, the overzealous fuel consumption, not to mention that plume of black smoke! My initial thoughts were quite like yours, kept suspecting some major engine problems, perhaps sensor malfunctions or something. But it wasn't quite that drastic. Turned out to be defective cable connections, specifically on the battery and ground cables. Over time, they'd gotten corroded and weren't providing a proper electrical connection. So, the guys at my local garage just did a somewhat thorough cleanup, replaced the defective cables and voila, like that, issue sorted! The engine light went off, the start-up delays are gone, so is the smoke and power-loss and the fuel efficiency seems to be back on track. I had the same worry earlier, thinking it's a serious engine problem. But honestly, dude, half the time, it's just something small like this. And a good mechanic can easily sort it out. Keep me posted on how things go, will you? Good luck!
