2009 Hyundai Matrix Experiencing Check Engine Light, Power Loss, and Shaking Issues: Potential Leak in Tank Vent System?

Shaking while idling

Loss of engine power

Stalling while idling

Jerking on acceleration

Unsteady engine

Check engine light on

Hey! I've got a 2009 Hyundai Matrix, powered by gas, with about 65762 KM mileage. Recently, I've been experiencing some weird issues, such as the check engine light being on, drop in power, the engine acting up, jerking when I hit the accelerate, stalls while idling, and it shakes too when idle. I'm thinking it could be a leak in the tank vent system. Had a trashy time with my last mechanic, so just wanted some advice before heading to a new one. Anyone else had similar problems and if so, what sort of experience did you have with your mechanic? Cheers!

Hey there, I totally get you. My 2012 Hyundai Elantra had similar symptoms awhile back. Felt like it lost its zap, the light was on, and it shook as if it just drank five espressos. The culprit was indeed a busted activated carbon filter. The activated carbon filter is a key part of the EVAP system and when it's not playing ball, it can stir havoc in your ride. And while it isn't a showstopper, it can give you some erratic car behavior, just like you described. The good news is, when I got it fixed at the local garage, they didn't need much time to sort it out. After having a poke around, my mechanic mentioned these bad boys don't usually fail, but they can get defeated by dirt and deposits. So if you ask me, I'd recommend having it checked out. As they say, better safe than sorry. Cheers!

Hey! I experienced something similar with my 2010 Hyundai Matrix. Couldn't put a finger on what was up, but it was the same kind of tomfoolery - check engine light flashing, juddering, yada yada. Turns out it was a blooming fault in the EVAP system just like yours! Sorted it all out with an activated carbon filter replacement. Just out of curiosity, do you remember how much you shelled out for the repair? And have there been any other gremlins lurking about in your motor since the fix? Cheeky asking, I know, but it’s good knowing what one might be in for. Cheers!

Hey! Good to hear you're on top of this pesky EVAP system issue. Sure, I can give you a ballpark figure. For the activated carbon filter fix, it set me back a decent 275.00 €. Bit of a kick in the teeth but gotta keep the good old Hyundai running smoothly, right? And you know what? Since seeing the mechanic, no more shaking, jerking or any of that funny business. Turned out there indeed was a leak in the tank ventilation system, just like I'd first suspected. But since getting that patched up, she's been running like a dream. So, I'd say get it taken care of pronto, before it drives you around the bend! Catch ya later!

Wow, you guys have been great! Definitely sound like you've both been there, done that, and got the t-shirt. It's comforting to know that others have experienced similar problems and got them solved without too much fuss. Plus, the price doesn't sound too extreme. Given the symptoms my car's been showing, I reckon it's indeed about the EVAP stuff you two mentioned. I'm getting my wheels checked out at a new mechanic tomorrow. If the culprit, as you both suggest, really is this activated carbon filter, I'll definitely have it replaced. Fingers crossed my Hyundai will be back to its old self soon – I miss the smooth rides! Thanks a ton, guys, for the advice and for sharing your experiences. I'll let you know how it turns out! Cheers!
