2010 Fiat Punto Engine Issues: Power Loss, Unusual Stalling, Black Exhaust Smoke, and Decreased Fuel Efficiency

Black smoke from exhaust on acceleration

Poor fuel economy

Check engine light on

Unsteady engine

Engine shuts off by itself

Stalling while idling

Loss of engine power

Jerking on acceleration

Strong exhaust smell

Hey everyone! I've got a bit of a puzzler with my 2010 Fiat Punto with a Gas engine. She's not running as smoothly as I'd like. Black smoke’s spewing out from the exhaust when I step on the gas. The check engine light’s on and the engine’s cutting out at unusual. It feels like it's losing power while running unevenly. On top of that, there's a lot of jerkiness when I accelerate, a dip in fuel economy, a hefty exhaust smell, and it's been stalling at idle too. Now, it crossed my mind it could be something like the fuel injection pressure going off track. Anyone experienced a similar dilemma? If you’ve encountered this issue, how did your local shop manage to get it resolved? Would appreciate any input or advice. Cheers!

Hey! I had a similar problem on my 2008 Fiat Grande Punto, and I'd say I have some car knowledge at my disposal. Took it to the local workshop, they told me it likely had to do with a error after replacing the fuel filter. The guy cleared the error entry, it ended up costing me just 45 Euro. Wonder if it could be the same scenario for you? However, to help you more, can you share if there's any recent maintenance you've done to it, especially around the fuel system? Keep me posted!

Hey there! Thanks for the advice. My last regular service was at 56684 km and I didn’t touch the fuel system that time. I guess it's time to find a good workshop to have things looked over. But hey, if it’s something as simple as clearing an error, I won't mind saving a few bucks!

Hey again! Ah, I see. Well, based on your latest input, it could really be a whole host of things given how interconnected modern car systems are. However, it does sound like fuel or air delivery trouble. While I initially thought it might be an issue with the fuel injection pressure as well, this doesn't look the case if you haven't tampered with the fuel system. Although I'm no mechanic, the symptoms you mentioned - black smoke, jerking, the poor fuel economy, engine cutting out - sound similar to what I experienced when the air-fuel mixture in my Punto was off due to a faulty Mass Air Flow sensor. This sensor regulates the amount of air that's mixed with the fuel before combustion. If it's off, well you can have an overly rich fuel mixture causing black smoke and power loss. But also, don't rule out the possibility of having a blocked or failing exhaust gas recirculation (EGR) valve. That might be sticking or simply failing, causing performance problems such as jerking, stalling and poor fuel economy. So definitely take the motor to a trusted shop to run a diagnostic, as I doubt your issues can be solved with a simple error clearing this time. Just thought I'd throw in some potential scenarios based on my own experience with the Grande Punto. Hope it helps and you get her running smoothly soon! Cheers!

Hey, appreciate the detailed response and all the possible leads! Your personal experience really adds value here. Mass Air Flow sensor and EGR valve - I'll definitely get those checked out. Also, it's interesting you mentioned the potential interconnectivity issue. I didn't think about that. Time to book an appointment with a good garage and get a full diagnostic done. Looks like a little car TLC is long overdue. Glad I reached out to this crew; you guys are lifesavers! Again, your help's much appreciated. Fingers crossed it's nothing major. Cheers!
