2010 Volvo S80 Emitting Black Smoke, Shutting Off, and Exhibiting Poor Fuel Economy

Hey fellow car enthusiasts! I've been having a heck of a time with my 2010 Volvo S80 (Gasoline engine, around 56k kms on it). It's chucking black smoke on acceleration, check engine light's keeping me company, and the engine's been shutting off at will. On top of that, my normally smooth Volvo's been jerking on acceleration, and the fuel economy is through the floor. Am I the only one smelling a strong exhaust stink or stalling while idling, or does anyone else feel my pain? I reckon it might have something to do with the fuel injection acting up. Anyone else had this issue and got it fixed without any mechanic horror stories? Cheers!

Summary of the thread

A 2010 Volvo S80 is experiencing issues such as emitting black smoke, engine shutdowns, jerking during acceleration, and poor fuel economy. These symptoms suggest a potential problem with the fuel injector, which can disrupt the engine's fuel metering. A similar case was resolved by replacing the faulty injector and cleaning the injection system, leading to improved performance and eliminating the issues. It is recommended to have the injector checked and possibly replaced to resolve these problems.

Hey there, Your troubles sound pretty similar to what I recently experienced with my 2007 Volvo XC90. Had the same exhausting black smoke, odd jerkiness while accelerating, and, don't get me started on how often that check engine light would light up the dashboard. Sure enough, it turned out to be a defective injector. This component, when faulty, can mess up your car's ability to meter the fuel that's entering the engine - leading to all the symptoms you listed. And yep, the unpleasant smell and stalling definitely checked out too. It required a decent bit of work at the garage, but I can testify it wasn't one of those intense, irreparable situations. They took out the faulty injector, cleaned the entire injection system, and replaced the injector. Seems like it’s a common issue with our Volvos of similar vintage. It got my car running smooth again. Hang in there, and get that injector checked out.

Hi there, Well, what d'ya know, your encounter seems to match my predicament to the tee. A bugger of a faulty injector, eh? Can you recall, by any chance, how much it set you back getting that fixed up? Also, since you got your Volvo mended, has there been any subsequent problems? Always nice to know what I might be headed into. Cheers!

Hey, Ah yeah, I remember that trip to the mechanic vividly. The cheeky problem with the injector ended up costing me around 515 quid, but I reckon it was worth every penny. Since they've fixed that irritant, my noble steed's engine has been running as smooth as a baby's bottom, no kidding. The idling's steady, the black smoke's history and the dreadful smell is completely gone. Oh, and about any following hitches, there's been nothing of the sort. My Volvo's been purring like a kitten ever since. All the issues tied up with the wonky injection are but a distant memory now. Trust me, you'll feel the difference once it's sorted. Good luck with the repair!

Hey there, Well, it's a relief to hear that your Volvo's cruising smoothly after tackling that injector issue. Your words definitely gave this old heart some hope. The repair cost seems fair enough if it'll nix my current woes. Time to sail off to my trusty garage, then, armed with this knowledge and see if this puts an end to my car-related tribulations. Fingers crossed I'll be back with good news soon. Thanks for sharing your experience! Catch ya later!
