2013 Peugeot 208 Exhibits Black Smoke, Check Engine Light On, and Other Issues: Possible Fuel Pressure Sensor Failure?

Poor fuel economy

Strong exhaust smell

Longer cold start time

Check engine light on

Black smoke from exhaust on acceleration

Jerking on acceleration

Loss of engine power

Hey! I drive a 2013 Peugeot 208, petrol version, which has already seen some mileage (68,142km). Recently, I've been nervous about a bunch of weird symptoms it has been presenting. I see black smoke whenever I accelerate, check engine light's been staying on, takes a while to start when it's cold, seems to have lost power, jolts when I up the revs, poor mileage, and there's this potent exhaust smell. Judging from these, I'm guessing it could be an issue with the fuel pressure sensor. Anyone else faced similar issues with their four-wheel? How did your mechanic handle it? I had a run-in with a lousy mechanic last time, so I'm trying to be more informed this time. Appreciate your insights!

Hey there, I had a similar experience with my 2010 Peugeot 206. Noticed pretty much the same symptoms - rough starts, lack of power, jolts when revving, and that off-putting exhaust stink. Took it down to my local garage and, after some inspection, they diagnosed it was indeed a problem with the fuel pressure sensor. The root cause, however, was defective cable connections leading to the sensor, which was messing up the metering. So, they worked on the cable connections. It wasn't a radiator or transmission kind of serious concern, but definitely needed attention because it could gradually lead to more complex problems if left unchecked. Also, after the fix, the performance returned to normal and the symptoms disappeared. Car's been running smooth since then. Hope this helps. Always better to tackle these things head-on. Cheers.

Hey, thanks for sharing your experience! You've made me a lot less concerned about my own Peugeot 208. So it was an issue with the cable connections to the fuel pressure sensor, eh? Quality mechanics can do some wonders evidently. But do you recall how much you had to cough up for the repair job? I'm trying to get a ballpark for what to expect this side. And has anything else cropped up since you got it all sorted? You know, just making sure I'm not in for a windfall of fix-ups. Cheers!

Hiya, Glad my previous message put some of your concerns at ease! To answer your question, the total damage for getting those cable connections repaired was around 155.00 €. Pretty reasonable if you ask me, considering the improvements in performance I noticed afterward. As for your second query, my trusty Peugeot 206 has been in excellent nick since its last visit to the mechanic's. The issue with the fuel pressure sensor was indeed dealt with and hasn't reared its ugly head since then. You know how it goes – once you've had a good look under the hood and dealt with the problem, your ride should be good to go. With that said, I hope your four-wheel gets back to its peak performance soon! And remember, doesn't hurt to keep an eye on any unusual behaviours, just to be on the safe side. Happy motoring!

Cheers for getting back! 155.00 € doesn't sound bad at all given what I've had to pay in the past for other issues. And it's so reassuring to hear that your Peugeot 206 has been running smoothly ever since. It gives me hope that mine will pull through too. Thanks a ton for all your insights! You've given me all the info I need to head in and discuss this with the mechanic. Additionally, I'll definitely keep a closer eye on my car's behavior from now on. Happy motoring to you as well!
