2016 Hyundai H1 Diesel: Black Smoke, Engine Light, and DPF Regeneration Issues

Hey! Just wondering if anyone has dealt with something I'm experiencing with my 2016 Hyundai H1, diesel engine, 9685 km on the clock. Been seeing black smoke from the exhaust when I accelerate, engine light's on, jerking on acceleration, and a serious exhaust smell. Seems like the DPF regeneration's failing too. Last mechanic visit was a nightmare so I'm guessing it might be due to excessive strain on the diesel particulate filter. Anyone had something like this? How did your repair shop handle it? Would appreciate any shared experiences or advice!

Summary of the thread

A 2016 Hyundai H1 diesel is experiencing black smoke from the exhaust, an engine light, jerking during acceleration, and a strong exhaust smell, indicating potential issues with the Diesel Particulate Filter (DPF) and its regeneration process. These symptoms suggest the DPF might be clogged, possibly due to short trips that prevent proper regeneration. A similar case involved replacing a defective DPF and ensuring the regeneration system functioned correctly, which resolved the issues. Proper diagnostics and repair are essential to address these problems and prevent further complications.

Hey! Sounds like you're having a rough go with the ol' Hyundai. Had a similar issue with my 2013 Hyundai i40, diesel engine as well. From what you're describing, it does indeed sound like it's the DPF (Diesel Particulate Filter) playing up. It's not uncommon for these filters to become clogged, especially if you do a lot of short runs rather than longer ones. These are serious symptoms for sure - black smoke and a shaky acceleration ain’t no laughing matter. So, taking it lightly is not an option. Trust me, I’ve been there! My mechanic had to do a thorough check of the entire exhaust system to make sure it was indeed the DPF fault, and not something else. Turned out it was an internal DPF defect, which meant it needed to be replaced - a bit of a bother, but necessary to get back on the road safely and without further issues. On top of that, the DPF regeneration system needed to be looked into - to ensure that future regenerations happened smoothly. It's an integral part because it helps eliminate the sooting issues without you having to replace the DPF too frequently. Hope this helps! Sure ain't no fun when your car decides to play silly buggers with you, but with the right diagnostics and a solid mechanic, it's a hurdle you can get over. Best of luck with your H1!

Thanks for your insightful response! I can't help but feel a pinch of relief that I'm not alone on this. Glad to hear your i40 is doing better. Can you refresh my memory on how much you paid to replace your DPF and rectify the regeneration system? Also, since getting those mishaps sorted, has anything else popped up related to the exhaust or was that the end of your troubles?

Hey, no problem! We're all here looking out for each other, aren't we? Okay, regarding those expenses, it set me back by around 1550 Euro to sort out the Diesel Particulate Filter issue. It had a nasty internal defect that we needed to clear up. Yeah, I felt that sting too, but I couldn't skimp on it - safety takes the wheel, every time. Thankfully, ever since Ironhide - yeah, I named my i40 that way - felt the loving touch of my mechanic's skilled hands (laughs), she's been purring like a kitten on full throttle. We got the heavy load on the filter taken care of - that annoying problem is no more! So, that was the bulk of the issue, and once rectified, there's been no follow-up drama relating to the exhaust after the repair. Hope it stays that way! Best of luck with your H1! Just hang in there, these little annoyances are part of the journey.

Wow, sounds like Ironhide really needed that touch of care! Also, the name sounds kickass too. 1550 Euro sounds hefty but considering how the situation could have turned worse if ignored, I agree on prioritizing safety. I'm preparing myself for what's ahead. Really hope it's just the DPF that's acting up and not something major. Your words have truly calmed me down, especially the part about no more exhaust-related issues once corrected. Helps me keep my hopes high! You've been a great help. Sharing your experience really made me feel less nervy about the trip to the mechanic. Hoping for the best for my H1! Thanks a bunch and may your ride always purr like a kitten on full throttle. Cheers!
