2016 Nissan Qashqai Experiencing Unusual Smoke, Power Loss, and Increased Fuel Consumption

Unsteady engine

Jerking on acceleration

Poor fuel economy

Strong exhaust smell

Check engine light on

Engine shuts off by itself

Loss of engine power

Stalling while idling

Black smoke from exhaust on acceleration

Hey folks, I'm having a bit of a pickle with my 2016 Nissan Qashqai (gasoline engine, done about 84453KM on the clock so far). Here's the deal: My ride's belching black smoke (only on acceleration), the check engine light's stuck on, engine's quitting itself, struggling with a power loss and feels unsteady. Plus there's this jerking snag when I hit the gas, crazy fuel consumption, strong exhaust stink, and the engine's been stalling at idle. I've had a less than stellar experience with my last mechanic, so before I book another potentially disastrous visit, I was wondering if anyone else had something similar? Could it be a defunct low pressure fuel system sensor? If you had the same gnarly issues, how'd your mechanic deal with it? Any advice would be greatly appreciated. Thanks in advance!

Hey there, Sounds pretty rough, and not gonna lie, I reckon it’s more than just a dud fuel system sensor. Had a similar issue with my 2013 Nissan Rogue (gasoline engine, pretty decent mileage on it too). Symptoms sounded exactly like yours: black smoke out the back, rough ride, engine throwin' a hissy fit, unsteady on the road, and an exhaust smell that could kill a horse. Turned out, it was my electrical system under the hood. The mechanic told me the defectives were the cable connections. Apparently, corrosion creeps in and messes up all the connections - terminal and battery cables, ground straps, you name it. Even though the LEDs on dash weren't indicating anything, it was a serious issue. If left untreated, It could've messed up my battery, starter, or alternator. It was some serious work to get everything done, replacing old cables, scrubbing corrosion off the terminals, and doing some tests after to make sure everything is running in ship shape. Made the engine run smooth, solved the idling problem, jerking, and the consumption went back to normal too. You might wanna get your electrical system, especially the cable connections, checked out asap. Hope this helps!

Hey! Your situation sounds eerily similar to mine. I hadn't considered an electrical fault, but it actually makes a lot of sense given the symptoms. Seems like those gremlins under the hood are causing more mischief than I thought! I'm curious though, can you remember roughly how much you coughed up to fix everything up? And have you hit any other speed bumps with the same issue since the big repair? Cheers in advance for the info!

Hey! Yeah, those engine gremlins can be a real pain in the exhaust, can't they? To answer your question, fixing up those dodgy cable connections ended up setting me back by about 95 Euro. Not exactly spare change, but worth it considering the issues it solved. Once we got that sorted, it did uncover a malfunctioning low pressure fuel system sensor. Good news is, it turned out to be a quick fix once we had found it. After seeing the mechanic, both the sensor issue and the electrical fault were sorted, no similar problems since then. Car's been running like a dream! So I'd definitely suggest you get your car checked out. It might end up saving you more trouble in the long run. Stay safe on the road!

Hey again, You're telling me! Those engine gremlins have been a real nightmare lately. But, your story's given me a bit of hope, I must admit. 95 Euro isn't exactly peanuts, but if it sorts the problem, it's worth it in my book. Sounds like your mechanic really knew their onions - great that they sorted both the cable connections and the sensor problem in one fell swoop! It's been a good while since my Nissan ran like a dream, gotta say I'm a bit envious there! Based on what you've said, I think the next step's obvious. Time to hunt down a decent mechanic who can give my troubled Qashqai the TLC it needs. Your advice's been immensely helpful. Thank you. Stay safe out there on the roads, too!
