2019 Kia Ceed Diesel Experiencing Performance Issues and Smoke Emissions

Loss of engine power

Unsteady engine

DPF regeneration failure

Check engine light on

Poor fuel economy

Black smoke from exhaust on acceleration

Hey! I've got a 2019 Kia Ceed diesel with about 140k KM on it. Lately, she's been spewing black smoke when I step on the gas, the check engine light keeps blinking and she's been a bit of a slug on the road--definitely feels like she's lost some of her pep. My engine's not running smooth either and my fuel economy has gone down the drain. Had a DPF regen failure warning too, so I suspect the differential pressure might be too low. I had a pretty rough ride with a mechanic last time and I want to be better-informed before I barge into another shop. Any of you ever had similar issues? Any mechanic stories, good or bad, to share? Any advice would be greatly appreciated!

Hey, sounds like you're having quite the pickle with your Ceed. You're right about the pressure issue, your symptoms align with an exhaust back pressure sensor defect. I've got a 2016 Kia Optima diesel myself and had a similar issue last year. The beast started coughing out black smoke similar to what you described. My fuel efficiency was shot and it felt like I was dragging a ton of bricks behind every time I revved her up. After dancing around with a few guesses, me and my mechanic finally managed to narrow it down to a faulty exhaust back pressure sensor. Seems like yours is having quite the same sequence of symptoms here. It's a pretty serious issue if left unchecked - can cause potential harm to the engine or the turbo, and you don't want to be dealing with either of those headaches. I got it sorted with a new sensor and some additional work with the exhaust system to sort the back pressure. You'll want to book an appointment with a trusted garage soon. It’s all resolved now and my car's back to running like a champion. Hope this gives you a bit of an idea! Good luck.

Hey there, really appreciate the advice! Seems like our Kias have a knack for being drama queens, eh? So you were saying it was a faulty exhaust back pressure sensor in your case? I've been suspicious about the same with my Ceed. I reckon I'd better start looking for a decent garage. By the way, do you recall how much that all cost you? And has there been any further problems since you got the sensor and exhaust system sorted? Just trying to know what I might be getting myself into. Cheers for the help.

Hey there! Yeah, no kidding about our Kias having some flair for drama, right?! In my case, the bill for sorting the faulty exhaust back pressure sensor totaled 250.00 €. Since it was sorted, she's been running like a dream, no more problems or heartaches - knock on wood. And remember that differential pressure problem you suspected? We got that sorted as well while we were at it, had to make sure the DPF was working just right. So, all in all, I reckon it’s worth the investment, but it's always best to get a few quotes before committing, just to bag the best deal. After seeing the mechanic, the car should run smoothly. Not cheap, I know, but definitely a lot cheaper than a new engine! Hope this helps, good luck with your baby!

Thanks a ton! Your advice has been really valuable. The cost isn't as bad as I was fearing - yeah, definitely cheaper than a new engine! I'll start pricing around for some quotes. It's reassuring to know that your Kia has been running smoothly since the fix. I'm hoping mine will do the same once I get this sorted out. Let's hope the Kia drama ends here, eh? Cheers for the help and goodwill. All the best!
