2020 Fiat Argo Exhibits Black Smoke, Decreased Power, and Poor Fuel Economy: Potential Lambda Sensor Issue?

Hey there I've got a bit of a situation with my 2020 Fiat Argo, petrol engine, clocked about 49k km so far. Lately, I've noticed black smoke pouring out when I push the pedal, not to mention the dang check engine light's on non-stop. Power's gone down a notch, the engine isn't as steady, and there's this annoying jerk on acceleration - that and the fuel economy's in the gutter. I'm guessing it might be a worn Lambda sensor, but I'm kinda wary 'cause of a bad run-in at the mechanic's last time. Anyone else faced something similar? What kinda experience did you have getting it fixed up? Really appreciate your time, guys.

Summary of the thread

The 2020 Fiat Argo is experiencing black smoke, decreased power, and poor fuel economy, with a persistent check engine light. These symptoms suggest a potential issue with the Lambda sensor, which may be dirty or clogged. Cleaning the sensor with a special cleaner at a reliable garage could resolve the problem, improving engine performance and fuel efficiency.

Did this summary help you solve your problem?

Hey, sounds like you're having quite the ordeal. I've gone through a similar rough patch with my 2017 Fiat Uno. Definitely sounds like a Lambda sensor issue as you guessed, and I had to tackle the same situation. The ceramic part of the sensor was dirty and clogged up, just like in your case. I took it to my local garage, where they had to get stuck in and clean it out real good. They used some special sensor-safe cleaner, and it didn't take 'em too long. To be honest, they said a dirty Lambda sensor isn’t the end of the world but it sure can muck up your fuel economy, engine stability, and yes, even emit some ugly black smoke. Word of advice from a fellow Fiat owner - make sure to choose a reliable garage. The last one I used did a stellar job. After they cleaned the sensor, my Uno ran smoother than a hot knife through butter! Hope that's a help and you get your issue sorted soon!

Hey, thanks for the solid advice! Sounds like quite the relief to hear how it turned out for your Uno. You remember how much you shelled out for the cleaning gig? And has there been any recurring troubles since then or is your sensor behaving itself now? Cheers!

Hey happy to help! Went through my old receipts and it turns out it cost me a cool 375€ at the mechanic's to clean up and fix the grime inside the Lambda sensor's ceramic part. A bit of a sting to the pocket, but totally worth it in the end, ya know? And to answer your second question - no more drama since then. The Lambda sensor's been behaving like a dream. No more black smoke or engine stutters, plus the fuel economy’s back up to snuff. What a relief, right? Hope things sort out just as smooth for your Argo! Cheers!

Ah, thanks for that detailed response! A little pricey, but guess it’s worth it for a smooth ride and no more black smoke belching, eh? It’s reassuring to hear your sensor’s been behaving itself since the cleanup too. Your insight’s been really helpful, and it’s definitely given me the push I needed to take my Argo to the local garage and get the Lambda sensor seen to. I'll take your advice and choose a reliable garage this time - no more getting hoodwinked for me, thank you very much! I really appreciate the assist cheers!
