370Z tail lights switching on intermittently

Hi, I'm having a strange issue with my 2012 Nissan 370Z with a gasoline engine. My tail lights seem to be acting up – they switch on intermittently, even when the car is off! I've noticed an error stored in the error memory, but haven't been able to pinpoint the exact cause. I've checked the fuse box and the dashboard lights seem to be working fine, so I'm a bit stumped. Could it be a faulty light switch, or something more complicated?

Summary of the thread

A 2012 Nissan 370Z is experiencing an issue where the tail lights switch on intermittently, even when the car is off. The problem might be due to a faulty light switch or loose connections in the wiring harness behind the dashboard. Checking the cable and plug connections of the light switch is suggested as a potential solution. Given the complexity and presence of an error code, professional inspection at a workshop is recommended.

I had a similar problem with my 370Z a while back. The symptoms you described – tail lights switching on randomly and an error code – sound very familiar. Have you checked the cable and plug connections of the light switch itself? Sometimes a loose or corroded connection can cause these kinds of electrical gremlins.

Thanks for the quick reply! I glanced at the connections, but didn't really investigate thoroughly. When you say "cable and plug connections", do you mean where the switch plugs into the wiring harness behind the dashboard? Was yours obviously loose, or was it more subtle?

Yes, I'm referring to the connection of the switch to the wiring harness, which is located behind the dashboard. In my case, the defect was a loose contact in the connector itself. However, due to the error memory and the overall complexity, I would advise you to have it checked professionally in a workshop. My expenses at that time were 95€.

Okay, I understand. Thanks so much for sharing your experience and advising caution. I'll take it to a workshop and have them check the connections and the switch itself. Turns out the repair cost matched yours. At least I had an idea of what to expect!
