4Runner Automatic Transmission Problem

My 2007 Toyota 4Runner diesel won't start sometimes, and the check engine light is on. It seems to be related to the automatic transmission parking position. I'm also experiencing gearbox slippage and unclean shifts. I pulled the codes, and there's an error stored related to the shift lock solenoid. Mileage is 124870 km. Is this a defective control unit?

Sounds familiar. I had similar issues with my 4Runner. Check engine light, wouldn't start sometimes. Check your neutral position too. Does it start in neutral?

Thanks for the reply! I will try starting in neutral next time the fault occurs. Was your error also related to the shift lock? Did you have any shifting problems?

Yep, same issue! Shift lock solenoid failure. The shifting got progressively worse. Started slipping between gears. Take it to a reputable workshop; they should be able to diagnose the control unit.

Thanks! Appreciate the advice. Confirmed the control unit was defective. Repair ran about 1000€. All sorted now!
