4Runner brake fluid loss and pedal feel
Summary of the thread
A 2002 Toyota 4Runner owner noticed a drop in brake fluid levels and unusual brake pedal feedback. The issue was suspected to be related to worn brake pads, which can cause fluid levels to drop as caliper pistons extend further, affecting the hydraulic system's pressure. Upon inspection at a workshop, it was confirmed that the front brakes were severely worn, leading to the problem. The solution involved replacing the worn brakes and the brake fluid.

That's a good point. I haven't inspected the brakes recently. If it's just worn pads, why the strange pedal feel? Is it like a hydraulic system losing pressure somewhere?

Exactly! Think of it like this: more travel in the caliper means more fluid displaced. Severely worn pads can require so much fluid that it affects the master cylinder's ability to maintain proper pressure. I strongly suggest you visit your trusted workshop as soon as possible.

Understood, thank you. I took it to a workshop, and it turned out to be severely worn front brakes, just as you suspected. Repair including fluid replacement costed 480€. I appreciate the pointer!

I had a similar issue with my 4Runner. Low brake fluid and spongy pedal. It could be a leak somewhere in the hydraulic system, but with that mileage, have you checked your brake pads lately? Worn brakes can cause the fluid level to drop as the caliper pistons extend further.
