4Runner Brake Light Failure

Thanks for the suggestion! I just tried wiggling the brake pedal, but the error message is still there and the brake lights still don't work. Could it still be the brake switch if wiggling the pedal doesn't change anything?

Yes, it's still quite possible. In my case, wiggling the pedal only worked temporarily. The switch was just worn out. Given that you've already checked the obvious things like bulbs and fuses, I'd recommend taking it to a workshop to have the brake switch properly diagnosed and replaced. It's a relatively inexpensive part, but you need to make sure you get the right one and install it correctly.

Thanks a lot for the advice! I took it to a workshop today and they confirmed it was the brake switch. Apparently, I was resting my foot on the brake pedal a bit too much, which caused the switch to wear out prematurely. They replaced it, and everything is working fine now. The bill was 0€, since they were kind enough to just readjust it!

Sounds familiar! I had a similar problem with my old Renault Megane a few years back. The brake lights would randomly fail, and it turned out to be a faulty brake switch. Does the error message disappear if you wiggle the brake pedal?
