4Runner Diesel Engine Smoke
Summary of the thread
A 2002 Toyota 4Runner with a diesel engine was experiencing issues such as the check engine light being on, reduced power, and smoke during acceleration, particularly uphill. The suspected cause was a malfunctioning crankcase ventilation valve. After consulting with others who had similar experiences, it was confirmed that the crankcase ventilation was indeed defective. Repairing this issue resolved the smoke problem and restored the engine's performance.

Yeah, the idle is a little rough sometimes, especially when the engine is cold. Did you notice any whistling sounds? And how much did the repair cost you?

No whistling sounds on mine. Given the rough idle and the smoke, I'd say the ventilation is the problem. My final repair bill was 300€. I strongly recommend you take your vehicle to a trusted shop.

Appreciate the insight. I took it to the shop, and you nailed it! Turns out the crankcase ventilation was defective. Cost me 360€ to get it sorted, but at least the smoke is gone and the engine's running smooth again. Thanks!

I had similar symptoms on my old Volvo S60. Engine light, loss of power, and exhaust smoke. In my case, it was a defective PCV valve. Is your idle rough at all?
