4Runner Jerking and Stalling
Summary of the thread
A 2000 Toyota 4Runner diesel is experiencing jerking, power loss, stalling, a rough engine, a strong exhaust smell, and an illuminated check engine light. These symptoms, along with an error code, suggest potential issues with the manifold sensor, air intake, or a vacuum leak. A defective intake manifold, possibly leaking due to scorching, is identified as the likely cause. Repairing the intake manifold resolves the issues, restoring smooth operation.

Thanks! I haven't specifically checked the air intake recently. Could a faulty intake manifold really cause all of these problems at once?

Yes, a defective intake manifold can cause all of those symptoms. Scorching can lead to leaks, impacting engine performance significantly. Given the error code and the symptoms you described, it is highly probable that your intake manifold is the culprit. I would recommend taking it to a trusted workshop to confirm the diagnosis and get it repaired.

Thank you so much! It was indeed a defective intake manifold, apparently leaking due to scorching, as you suggested. The repair cost me 1180€, but the 4Runner is running smoothly again. I appreciate your insight!

I had similar symptoms with my 4Runner. It could be a gasket leak, but the jerking and stalling points more towards a potential issue with the intake manifold itself. When was the last time you checked the air intake for any obstructions or damage?
