4Runner key battery warning

I'm getting a weird error on my 2002 Toyota 4Runner diesel. The key battery low warning keeps popping up. Now my keyless access doesn't work at all, and there's an error stored in the memory. I can't even unlock the doors properly anymore! Think the battery in the key is just dead?

Sounds familiar! I had a similar thing happen with my 4Runner a while back. Key fob just stopped working. Have you tried the spare key to see if it's the same issue? If the spare works, it's almost certainly the battery in your main key.

Good call! I'll try the spare. If it IS the battery, is it something easy to replace myself, or am I looking at a trip to the shop?

When mine went, I tried replacing the battery myself, but it didn't solve the problem, even after following a guide I found online. Ended up taking it to a workshop, and they sorted it out pretty quickly. Turned out the key needed some kind of reprogramming after the battery change.

Thanks for the heads-up! I took it to the shop, and you were spot on – new battery and reprogramming. Cost me 37€, but at least it's fixed!
