4Runner mass air flow sensor issue

Air filter was changed recently. Could a defective mass air flow sensor really cause all those issues at once?

It's possible, especially the stalling and check engine light. Increased fuel consumption and smoke suggest the engine's not getting the right air/fuel mixture, which a bad MAF sensor can definitely cause. I would suggest visiting a mechanic to read out the error codes.

Thanks. Took it to the local shop; they confirmed it was the mass air flow sensor. Repair cost me 365€. Runs smoothly now.

Sounds familiar. Had similar symptoms on my old Saab 9-3. Check engine light and rough idling were the first signs. Have you checked your air filter recently? Could be contributing to a faulty reading from the MAF.
