4Runner Transmission Sensor Issue

I'm having issues with my 2014 Toyota 4Runner with a gasoline engine. It has about 182339 km. The engine warning light, and sometimes the transmission warning light, come on. Diagnostics show an error with the transmission oil temperature sensor. The gearbox sometimes enters an emergency mode, and I've noticed slippage, unclean shifts, and grinding noises. Could this be low gearbox oil, or something else?

Summary of the thread

A 2014 Toyota 4Runner experienced issues with the engine and transmission warning lights, along with symptoms like slippage, unclean shifts, and grinding noises. Diagnostics indicated a problem with the transmission oil temperature sensor. The core problem was identified as a faulty sensor, which was sending incorrect readings to the vehicle's computer, causing the transmission issues. Replacing the sensor resolved the problem, restoring normal transmission function.

Sounds familiar! I have a 4Runner too, and I had almost the exact same symptoms. Slipping gears, that awful grinding noise... felt like driving through gravel! The light was on constantly, flashing sometimes. The 'emergency mode' is the computer's way of trying to save the transmission from exploding. Are you experiencing any overheating problems? That was my first clue. It turned out to be the transmission sensor itself. Did you check it yet? Could also be something else – these things are like a box of chocolates, aren't they?

Thanks for sharing. I haven't checked specifically for overheating, though the dashboard temperature gauge seems normal. Can you explain how you diagnosed the transmission sensor? Were there other tests, or specific error codes that pointed to the sensor?

Well, like you, I first suspected low fluid, but the levels were fine. I didn't do any specific tests. I took it to my local workshop as soon as the symptoms got really bad. Those error codes are pretty generic and can be a pain to narrow down the real problem. The guys at the workshop told me the sensor was faulty. They said it was sending incorrect readings to the computer, which was causing all the shifting problems. It's like the car's brain is getting bad information! I'd suggest getting it checked by a professional; playing guessing games with your transmission could be expensive.

I appreciate the advice. I took my 4Runner to a trusted workshop, and they confirmed the transmission oil temperature sensor was faulty. Replacing the sensor fixed the issues, and the transmission is now working correctly. The total repair cost was 365€ Thanks again for your help.
