A1 Temp Gauge Issues Point to Blocked Cooling System

Hey forum My A1 (2016, gas engine, 174680km) has been acting weird lately with temperature readings. Getting mixed signals from the dash temp gauge, plus the check engine light is on. Engine also seems to take forever to warm up properly. I looked under the hood and noticed the cooling grille seems a bit clogged up. Had a not-so-great experience with my last mechanic, so before taking it back to a shop, wanted to check if anyone here dealt with similar automotive cooling issues? Could a blocked grille really cause all these symptoms, or should I be looking at something else in the cooling system? Looking for your experiences and maybe recommendations on what to check first. Thanks.

Had similar issues with my A3 2019 gasoline model. The symptoms match what turned out to be a combination of problems in the engine cooling system. A clogged cooling grille can definitely contribute to engine overheating, but those mixed temperature readings likely point to a failing temperature sensor or faulty wiring. The slow warm-up issue suggests the thermostat might be stuck open. When my car showed these symptoms, the diagnosis revealed: Faulty coolant temperature sensor, Corroded wiring to the sensor, Partially blocked radiator from debris buildup The radiator blockage was serious enough to require a complete flush. Left untreated, these cooling system issues can lead to major engine damage and expensive repairs. Suggested checks before visiting a shop: 1. Visual inspection of coolant level and color 2. Check for visible leaks around radiator and hoses 3. Clear any obvious debris from cooling grille 4. Scan for error codes related to temperature sensor Car overheating problems usually get worse if ignored. Would recommend getting it checked professionally, especially with those inconsistent temperature readings.

Exactly same thing happened with my A1 a few months back. Those mixed temperature readings and check engine light really had me worried. It ended up being a restricted airflow problem due to a clogged radiator grille, but the mechanic also found issues with the thermal management system that needed fixing. Would be curious to know how much the repair cost you and if you experienced any other issues since then? My total bill came to 380 Euro for the complete thermal management system service, including sensor replacement and radiator cleaning.

Since getting the repairs done on my A3, the engine cooling system has been working perfectly. The main issue with the restricted cooling grille was resolved, and they found a defective fuse that was causing some of the sensor problems. Total cost breakdown was reasonable, 52 Euro for the fuse replacement, plus the thermal management system work. The car maintains steady temperature readings now, and the check engine light hasnt returned. The automotive cooling performance is much better, especially during longer drives. Its been about 3 months since the fix, and no other cooling-related problems have surfaced. Worth mentioning that regular cleaning of the cooling grille area and routine coolant system maintenance helps prevent these issues from recurring. The mechanic recommended checking the grille every few months for debris buildup to avoid future car overheating problems.

Thanks for all the feedback. I finally took it to a local shop yesterday, glad I did because turns out the thermal management issues were more complex than just the clogged grille. The mechanic found a faulty temperature sensor and some corroded wiring that was causing those weird gauge readings. They did a complete cooling system service including clearing all the restricted airflow passages and replacing the bad sensor. Total came to 425 Euro, bit more than I hoped but less than risking engine damage. Car runs perfectly now, temperature gauge stays steady and the check engine light is finally off. Really appreciate all the advice here. Helped me understand the problem better before heading to the shop. Going to be much more proactive about checking that cooling grille regularly from now on to avoid future car overheating issues.
