A3 DPF Failure Causes Power Loss and Heavy Smoke

My Audi A3 2008 diesel is acting up with some weird particulate filter symptoms. The engine warning light is on and power feels really limited. When I push the gas, there is smoke coming out and a strong exhaust smell. A mechanic recently messed up some work on my car, so I am hesitant to go back. The car has done 72070 KM and I suspect the DPF pressure might be too low. Has anyone experienced similar emission control issues with their A3? What was the actual problem and did you get it fixed properly?

Had similar symptoms on my Audi A4 2005 2.0 TDI. The reduced power and excessive smoke pointed to a faulty exhaust back pressure sensor, which caused the diesel engine to run in limp mode for protection. The diesel exhaust system needs proper sensor readings to manage regeneration cycles of the DPF. When the sensor fails, the emission control system cannot accurately measure particulate buildup, leading to incomplete regeneration cycles. The repair required replacing the pressure sensor and cleaning the exhaust system passages. This was a serious issue since continued driving could have damaged the DPF and catalytic converter. The exhaust system works as intended now, no more smoke, proper power delivery, and warning lights cleared. The symptoms match classic pressure sensor failure: limited power, excessive smoke, and engine warning lights. Would strongly recommend having the pressure sensor diagnosed before the problem escalates to more expensive exhaust system components. Thanks for sharing that experience with the pressure sensor issue. I had almost identical problems with my 2008 A3. The particulate filter warning kept coming on and the car felt seriously underpowered. Really good to hear your repair sorted it out completely. Since getting the exhaust back pressure sensor replaced, my A3 has been running perfectly with no DPF issues whatsoever. The repair cost was 245 Euro total, which included labor and cleaning of the surrounding exhaust system components. The fix completely resolved both the reduced power problem and the excessive smoke. The diesel engine now maintains proper performance without any warning lights or emission control problems. Regular driving is enough to keep the DPF regeneration cycles working as designed. The low pressure readings that were causing the problems are now completely normal. It was definitely worth addressing quickly before it could cause more extensive damage to the exhaust system. No other sensor or DPF-related issues have occurred in the months since the repair. The mechanic also confirmed that faulty pressure sensors are a known weak point on these diesel engines, but once replaced they typically remain reliable for many years.

Thanks for the helpful advice. I finally got my A3 fixed last week and wanted to share how it went. Found a diesel specialist who properly diagnosed the low pressure sensor issue. The repair took about 3 hours and cost 280 Euro including parts and labor. They cleaned the exhaust system while doing the sensor replacement. The car runs perfectly now, full power restored and no more smoke or warning lights. The DPF regeneration is working normally again based on the diagnostic readings. Such a relief to have it sorted properly. The mechanic explained the pressure sensor was definitely the root cause, and showed me the old damaged part. They also gave the DPF a thorough inspection and confirmed no permanent damage occurred. Really glad I got it fixed before the reduced power mode could cause bigger problems. The car feels like new again.
