A5 Power Tailgate Hall Sensor Failure Fix Guide

Looking for advice on my A5s power tailgate issues, getting error codes and the automatic tailgate stops halfway. Shop previously messed up a simple repair, so hesitant to go back. Vehicle sensor issue seems likely based on symptoms. Anyone had similar problems with their hall sensor? Car details: 2009 A5, gas engine, 178061km. Whats the typical repair cost and reliability of fixes for this?

Had the same power tailgate issue on my 2012 A4 last summer. The tailgate motor would stop out of nowhere and throw electrical sensor codes. After diagnosis, it turned out the hall sensor wiring had deteriorated where it flexes near the tailgate hinge. The fix required replacing the entire wiring harness for the power tailgate system since individual wire repair wasnt reliable long-term. The sensor fault was causing the control module to shut down the system as a safety measure. This is a fairly common failure point as the wires get stressed from constant opening/closing. While not a critical safety issue, leaving it unfixed can eventually damage the tailgate motor from repeated partial cycles. Two tips based on my experience: Get the specific fault codes read first, helps confirm if its the hall sensor vs other electrical issues, Check if the wiring shows visible damage near the hinge area before replacing parts The repair is straightforward for shops familiar with these systems. A competent tech should be able to complete it in 2-3 hours once parts are on hand.

Thanks for sharing your experience. You described exactly what happened with my A5 tailgate. Great to hear your repair worked out. My power tailgate has been functioning correctly since being fixed but Id like to know how much you ended up paying? Always good to have a reference point for future. Also curious if youve had any sensor fault codes or other electrical issues pop up since the repair was done?

The repair costs ended up being reasonable at 95 Euro for fixing the faulty cable connection. Much better value than replacing the entire wiring harness. The vehicle sensor readings have been perfect since the mechanic found and fixed the hall sensor fault, no error codes or electrical issues in the past months. The power tailgate operation is back to normal, opening and closing smoothly without stopping midway. A proper diagnosis made all the difference, as they identified the exact point where the sensor wiring was compromised rather than swapping out components unnecessarily. For anyone else facing similar issues, having the specific fault codes read first definitely helps pinpoint if its truly a hall sensor problem versus other electrical sensor malfunctions. The repair has proven reliable, and the tailgate functions just like new.

Based on your shop experience, I finally took my A5 to a different mechanic who specializes in electrical issues. The diagnostic showed exactly what you mentioned, a damaged wire near the hinge was causing the sensor calibration problems. Total repair came to 120 Euro, which included fixing the wiring and recalibrating the power tailgate system. The automatic tailgate now works flawlessly, no more stopping halfway or error messages. Such a relief after dealing with this issue for weeks. The previous shop wanted to replace the entire tailgate motor without even checking the wiring. Really glad I got a second opinion. Been about 3 weeks since the repair and no vehicle sensor codes or electrical problems have returned.
