A6 Air Suspension Failure Causes Uneven Ride Height

Looking for advice on suspension issues with my 2021 A6. The ride height seems unstable, front is sitting lower than rear and the suspension feels rough. Getting warning lights and my low beams are misaligned. Pretty sure the height adjustment system is acting up. Leveling sensors maybe? Already had a bad experience with a mechanic so hoping to hear from others who dealt with similar problems. Car has 30577km, gasoline engine. Anyone else face this and got it properly fixed?

Summary of the thread

The conversation centers on a 2021 A6 experiencing air suspension issues, resulting in uneven ride height, rough suspension, and misaligned low beams. The suspected cause is a malfunctioning height adjustment system, possibly due to faulty leveling sensors. Solutions discussed include replacing the height sensors, fixing corroded wiring, and recalibrating the suspension system. Proper diagnosis and repair by a qualified mechanic are emphasized to prevent further damage and ensure the vehicle's stability and performance.

My 2018 A7 2.0T had nearly identical symptoms. The height sensor malfunction caused inconsistent ride height readings, making the air suspension system unable to maintain proper leveling. The control module was receiving incorrect signals, which also affected the headlight self-leveling system. The root cause was a faulty front height sensor and corroded connections at the load sensor. Moisture had damaged the wiring harness connecting to the control module. The rough ride occurred because the system defaulted to a safety mode, preventing proper air suspension adjustment. This is a serious issue requiring proper diagnosis with specialized equipment. The entire height sensor assembly needed replacement, along with the wiring harness. The repair also required recalibration of the air suspension system and headlight leveling. Most critical was addressing it quickly to prevent additional strain on other suspension components. Driving with malfunctioning height sensors can damage the air compressor and struts. The complete repair took two days, including testing and calibration to ensure proper ride height at all corners. If experiencing these symptoms, avoid driving the vehicle more than necessary until repaired, as it can lead to more expensive suspension damage.

Wow, this is exactly what happened to my 2019 A6! The air suspension and leveling system were giving me similar headaches last year. My ride height was all over the place and the car felt really unstable. Went through the same repair process with the height sensor replacement and wiring fix. Would you mind sharing what the total repair cost was in your case? Also curious if youve had any suspension issues since getting it fixed? Mine has been running smoothly, but always good to know what to watch out for.

Had the repair done last week and really happy with the outcome. The Height control restricted warning is completely gone now. The leveling system works perfectly after they fixed the control rod on the faulty height sensor. Total bill came to 110 Euro which seemed reasonable considering the specialized work needed. No issues with the suspension since the fix. The ride height stays consistent now and the car feels much more stable. The control module is getting accurate readings from all sensors, so the air suspension adjusts properly. The headlight alignment has also corrected itself since the leveling sensor is working correctly again. Always better to address these suspension problems quickly when they show up. A failing height sensor can stress other components if left unchecked. My advice would be to keep monitoring the ride height, any inconsistency could signal early problems with the leveling system.

I finally got it sorted at a certified shop after the first mechanic made things worse. They diagnosed a damaged height sensor and corroded wiring in the load sensor assembly. The entire repair including parts and labor ran about 980 Euro, but it was worth every cent. The whole job took about 3 days since they had to order some specific parts for the leveling system. They replaced both front height sensors, fixed the wiring to the control module, and recalibrated the entire suspension. The mechanic showed me the corroded connections, definitely explains the erratic behavior. The car drives perfectly now, proper ride height, smooth suspension, and no more warning lights. The headlights are properly aligned too. Been about 2 months since the repair and everything is still working great. Definitely learned my lesson about going to qualified shops for these complex suspension issues. When the height adjustment system acts up, it really needs someone who knows what they are doing.
