A7 Throttle Sensor Issues Causing Poor Acceleration

My A7 from 2011 (168k km, diesel) is acting up with sluggish acceleration and the check engine light is on. The throttle sensor seems like the likely culprit. Anyone dealt with similar symptoms? Had a not-so-great experience with my last mechanic, so looking for insights before taking it in again. Really interested in hearing what diagnostics and repairs others needed, and roughly what they paid.

Summary of the thread

The 2011 A7 experienced sluggish acceleration and a check engine light, suspected to be due to throttle sensor issues. A similar case with an A6 revealed that the problem could be more complex, potentially involving the entire throttle body assembly due to internal corrosion. However, after seeking a second opinion, the A7's issue was identified as carbon buildup affecting throttle sensor readings. A thorough cleaning of the throttle body and air intake system resolved the problem, highlighting the importance of accurate diagnostics before proceeding with costly repairs.

Had nearly identical issues on my 2014 A6 3.0 TDI last summer. The symptoms matched exactly, sluggish throttle response delay and check engine light. Initial scan revealed a faulty throttle position sensor, but the real problem was more complex. The entire electronic throttle body assembly needed replacement due to internal corrosion affecting the sensors. This directly impacted both the air intake management and fuel efficiency. The repair was quite serious since the throttle body is integral to engine management. The car was in the shop for 3 days as they needed to reset and adapt the new unit to the engine control module. After replacement, the throttle response became instant again and the check engine light cleared. The fuel efficiency also improved noticeably. Most importantly, the engine regained its smooth power delivery. Given your mileage and symptoms, I strongly suggest getting the throttle body diagnostics done at a certified shop. This isnt a repair to postpone, as it can lead to further engine management issues if left unaddressed.

Thanks for sharing your experience with the A6. That throttle body issue sounds very similar to what I am dealing with in my A7. Good to know it sorted out your air flow problems and got rid of the limp mode issues. Since the fix, did you run into any other engine idling problems? Also wondering what the total repair cost was, if you dont mind sharing. My local shop quoted me 850 Euro for parts and labor, trying to figure out if thats reasonable.

Since getting the throttle valve replaced on my A6, the engine has run perfectly with no idling issues at all. The repair completely resolved the initial problems with the throttle response and check engine warnings. My total repair costs were actually lower than your quote, 265 Euro for fixing the accelerator pedal module which turned out to be the root cause. The throttle body itself was functioning correctly after a thorough cleaning and electronic reset. Your 850 Euro quote seems quite high unless they are planning to replace the complete throttle body assembly. The air intake system now works flawlessly and fuel efficiency has remained consistently good. No check engine lights or performance issues have returned in the months since the repair. The key was having a proper diagnostic done to identify the actual faulty component rather than just assuming the entire throttle body needed replacement. If your quote includes a full throttle body replacement, you might want to get a second opinion to verify if that level of repair is truly necessary. Sometimes a simpler fix like in my case can resolve the symptoms.

Thank you everyone for the advice. Took my A7 to a different shop yesterday and got much better news than expected. Turns out I had carbon buildup affecting the throttle sensor readings, causing the response delay. The mechanic did a thorough cleaning of the throttle body and air intake system instead of replacing parts right away. They also performed a full diagnostic scan that showed no other underlying issues. Total bill came to 220 Euro for cleaning and diagnostics, way less than the 850 Euro quote I got earlier. The car is running smooth now, no more sluggish acceleration or check engine light. Really glad I got that second opinion instead of jumping into expensive replacements. Going to stick with this new shop from now on. They took the time to properly diagnose the issue rather than just throwing parts at it. Lesson learned about finding a trustworthy mechanic who looks for the real problem first.
