Accent Overheating Slow Warm Up

Hi, I've got a 2009 Hyundai Accent with a gasoline engine that's giving me some grief. It's got about 105,000 km on it. Recently, the engine has been overheating, and it's also taking a really long time to warm up. I'm suspecting a thermostat issue. Has anyone experienced anything similar?

Summary of the thread

A 2009 Hyundai Accent is experiencing engine overheating and slow warm-up issues, suspected to be related to the thermostat. Possible causes include a faulty thermostat or issues with the temperature sensor. It is suggested to check the thermostat housing for leaks and use an OBD2 scanner to verify temperature sensor readings. If the thermostat is defective, professional diagnosis and replacement are recommended.

Sounds familiar. I had similar overheating and slow warm-up issues with my Accent. Have you checked the thermostat housing for any leaks or damage? Also, might be worth looking at the temperature sensor readings to see if they're within the normal range.

Thanks for the quick reply! I've visually inspected the thermostat housing, and it seems okay, no visible leaks. How exactly do I check the temperature sensor readings? Is that something I can do with a standard OBD2 scanner, or do I need specialized equipment?

An OBD2 scanner should give you the temp sensor readings. If the readings are erratic or stay low even when the engine is overheating, that's a strong indicator the thermostat is faulty. Could be the map-controlled thermostat. It's a bit more complex than the old-style ones. I'd recommend taking it to a workshop to get it properly diagnosed and replaced. I'd bet on a defective thermostat and a bill around 350€.

Appreciate the advice. Sounds like I'm in over my head a bit. I'll take it to a reputable workshop and have them check the thermostat and temperature sensor. Hopefully, it's a straightforward fix. Thanks again!
