Accent weak battery flickering lights
Summary of the thread
A 2004 Hyundai Accent with a diesel engine exhibits weak battery performance and flickering lights upon starting. The initial suspicion is a faulty battery sensor. After confirming the sensor's defect, replacing it resolves the issue, suggesting that the sensor was sending incorrect information, leading to undercharging of the battery.

Voltage at idle is within normal parameters. Overnight resting voltage seems slightly low. Could you elaborate on what the problem was with your Astra, exactly?

Certainly! After some head-scratching and consulting with a mechanic friend, it turned out to be a defective battery sensor. Apparently, it was sending incorrect information to the car's computer, which was undercharging the battery. Given your Accent's symptoms and the resting voltage being slightly low, I'd strongly suggest getting the battery sensor checked out by a qualified technician. It might save you unnecessary expenses on other parts.

That sounds familiar! I had a similar issue with my old 2012 Opel Astra, though it was a petrol engine. The symptoms were almost identical: sluggish starts and flickering lights. I initially suspected the alternator, but the voltage readings seemed okay at idle. Did you check the battery voltage while the engine is running, and also when it's off after sitting overnight? What readings are you getting?
