Accord Gearbox Slipping Wont Start

My 2002 Honda Accord diesel won't start. It thinks it's not in park, even when it is. It's got about 117k kilometers on it. The check engine light is on, and the gearbox feels like it's slipping sometimes, shifting clunky. I scanned it, and it's throwing some kind of error code. Could this be the automatic transmission control unit going bad? Anyone else had this?

Summary of the thread

A 2002 Honda Accord diesel is experiencing starting issues, with the vehicle not recognizing it is in park, accompanied by a check engine light and gearbox slipping. The problem might be related to the automatic transmission control unit, but a faulty gear linkage cable could also be a cause. It is suggested to inspect the gear linkage cable for damage or looseness, particularly at the transmission end. If the issue persists, professional diagnosis and repair are recommended.

Did this summary help you solve your problem?

Sounds familiar. I've got an Accord too, and had similar symptoms. Engine wouldn't crank, check engine light, weird shifting... Have you checked the gear linkage cable? Sometimes those get stretched or damaged and mess with the park/neutral safety switch.

Thanks for the quick reply! I did wiggle the gear linkage cable a bit, but didn't see anything obviously broken. Where exactly should I be looking for damage or stretching? And could a bad linkage really cause all those problems at once?

It's tough to say for sure without digging in. On mine, the cable itself looked okay, but the connection at the transmission end was loose. But honestly, with the check engine light and shifting issues, it does sound like a potential control unit problem. If you're not comfortable troubleshooting deeper, I'd suggest taking it to a workshop to get a proper diagnosis.

Okay, thanks a bunch for the advice! I think you're right, it's probably beyond my limited skills. I'll take it to a shop and see what they say about the control unit. I'll post back here when I know more. They mentioned something about 1000€ for the repair, yikes!
