Active Hood Fault and Airbag Light Issue on GLK Diesel

My 2012 Mercedes GLK Diesel is showing an active hood fault message and the airbag light is on. I checked the error memory and there's an error stored. The spring actuators may have been triggered after only 31302 km. Could this be related to the car electronics, collision detection system, hood latch, or an impact sensor? I'm worried about the pedestrian safety system. Has anyone experienced this before? What could be the reason?

I understand your concern. While I haven't worked on a Mercedes GLK specifically, I encountered a similar issue with the active hood on my Volvo V60 after a minor fender-bender. The system is designed to raise the hood in a collision to provide more space between the hood and the engine, reducing pedestrian head injuries. The 'spring actuators' you mention are part of this system. The error code you're seeing likely indicates a problem with one or more of the components involved, such as the acceleration sensors that trigger the system. Do you know the exact error code?

The error code is showing a problem with the impact sensor. Acceleration sensor makes sense, though. Where exactly is the acceleration sensor located? Could a faulty hood latch or something else in the collision detection system cause it to trigger falsely? I'm trying to avoid an expensive repair if it's something simple.

In my experience with the Volvo, the impact sensor was located near the front bumper, as it needs to detect sudden deceleration. While a faulty hood latch could theoretically contribute to the problem, it is less likely to be the primary cause if the error code specifically points to the impact sensor. Given that the system appears to have been triggered, a sensor replacement and system reset are probable. I recommend taking your GLK to a qualified workshop for diagnosis and repair, especially considering the airbag warning light is also illuminated. This suggests a potential issue with the car's safety systems, which should be addressed by professionals. The repair cost was around 315€ in my case.

You were right! Took it to the workshop, and it turned out to be a defective acceleration sensor. They replaced it, reset the system, and the warning lights are gone! Cost me 315€ just like yours. Thanks for the insight; it really helped me understand what was going on.
