AdBlue Tank Empty Error on Countryman

My 2021 Mini Countryman diesel is throwing an AdBlue tank empty error. It displays in the speedometer and is stored in the error memory. Now, the engine won't start. From what I've read, a defective Ad-Blue output from the tank to the dosing unit is the likely culprit. Does this diagnosis sound right?

Hello. I also have a Mini Countryman diesel. Empty AdBlue on a relatively new Countryman That's odd, especially with that mileage. DEF fluid issues are becoming more common though with these emission standards. Are you sure it's just empty? I mean, did you actually check the level, or are you just going by the warning light? And when you say it won't start, does it crank at all? Could be other things at play here, affecting the SCR catalyst.

Yeah, I physically checked the tank; it's bone dry. And yes, the engine cranks, but it won't fire. You mentioned 'other things' – could you elaborate? I thought the system was pretty straightforward; low DEF fluid prevents starting to enforce emission standards.

Okay, dry tank and cranking but no start definitely points to the AdBlue system preventing ignition. The system is designed to do that to force compliance. While it should be straightforward, there could be blockages in the injection system itself or, as I suspected, a faulty pump not delivering the DEF fluid. Given that you've confirmed the tank is empty despite recent fills, it sounds like the output from the tank is indeed defective. You're probably looking at a new tank or pump. Best to get it to a workshop to confirm, as messing with the SCR catalyst and fuel efficiency components yourself can be risky.

Right, that makes sense. I appreciate the confirmation. I've booked it in. Turns out the AdBlue tank itself had a fault, restricting output. New tank and a check of the injection system later, and it's sorted. Cost about 250€ as you predicted. Thanks again.
