Alfa 147 E-Brake Failure: Warning Light & Error Code

Looking for help with parking brake problems on my Alfa 147. The electronic handbrake stopped working completely and now theres a warning light on the dash plus an error code stored. Running a 2001 147 diesel with 54379 km. Had some sketchy experiences with mechanics before, so really want to know if anyone has dealt with similar brake failure issues and what the actual fix was. Any tips on reliable brake diagnostics or common brake sensor problems with these models? Want to be prepared before taking it back to a shop.

Had similar brake fault issues on my Alfa 159 2.4 JTD from 2004. The electronic parking brake system completely failed, triggering warning lights and error codes. The brake diagnostics revealed the electric motor in the brake caliper was defective. It needed full replacement of the caliper motor unit, not just a brake sensor or brake switch adjustment. Its a known weak point in these models. The repair involved removing the entire caliper assembly, replacing the motor unit, and recalibrating the parking brake system. Parts availability can be challenging for these specific components. This was a serious issue that required immediate attention since the parking brake is a critical safety system. The brake failure meant the car was essentially undriveable, particularly on inclines. The brake diagnostics also showed the wiring harness needed inspection, as corrosion in the connectors can trigger similar symptoms. A proper diagnostic scan is essential, visual inspection alone wont identify the root cause. Would strongly recommend getting it checked by a specialist familiar with Alfa electronic parking brake systems. This isnt a DIY fix due to the calibration requirements after repair.

Thanks for sharing your experience with the 159. Not surprised to hear about another system glitch with these Alfas, mine turned out to be similarly expensive. The electronic brake repair included replacing both the motor and brake switch assembly. After the fix, everything worked perfectly, but then I noticed the ABS light would occasionally flicker. The mechanic mentioned this could be related to the parking brake repairs. Did you experience any other electrical issues after your repair? Also curious about the cost, the parts alone for my fix were around 450 Euro. Would be helpful to know what you paid for comparison.

Good news about the electronic parking brake repair on my 159. After spending 505 Euro on replacing the faulty electric motor in the brake caliper, the system works flawlessly now. Haven't experienced any ABS light issues or other electrical problems since the fix. The brake fault was completely resolved and the warning lights cleared immediately after the repair. A proper brake diagnostics test confirmed everything was working correctly. The calibration process they did as part of the repair seems to have prevented any secondary issues. Your flickering ABS light could indicate a separate issue with the brake switch or sensor connections. The electronic parking brake system is quite sensitive to any electrical irregularities. If it persists, might be worth having the ABS sensors checked specifically. Interesting that your parts cost was around 450 Euro. The pricing seems consistent across these repairs, given the specialized components needed for the electronic brake system.

After dealing with that parking brake nightmare for weeks, I finally got it sorted. Took it to a specialist garage that actually knew their way around Alfa electronics. The brake control module needed a complete replacement, plus they found some corroded wiring that was causing the brake fault warnings. Total bill came to 680 Euro, pretty steep, but at least the electronic brake system works perfectly now. No more warning lights or error codes. The mechanic showed me the old control unit and you could see where moisture had gotten in and damaged the circuit board. Best part is they actually explained everything and showed me the diagnostic readouts before and after. Makes a change from my previous experiences where mechanics just handed me a bill. The whole electronic brake calibration process took about 3 hours, but worth it for a proper fix. Going to keep an eye on it, but so far the brake failure warnings haven't come back. Definitely learned my lesson about getting these electronic brake issues checked out early before they get worse.
