Alfa 4C ABS Failure: Lateral Sensor Issues Explained

My 2018 Alfa 4C has been showing signs of ABS system problems lately. The ABS warning light stays on and the system seems completely inactive. A diagnostic scan revealed issues related to the lateral sensor. The vehicle stability feels compromised, especially during cornering, and the yaw rate seems off. The safety warning lights keep appearing on the dash. Has anyone experienced similar symptoms with their 4C? Looking for input on repair solutions and workshop experiences, particularly regarding sensor replacement or calibration. What was the final fix in your case and what was the repair cost?

I had a very similar issue with my 2016 Alfa Romeo Giulia last winter and can share my experience as someone with moderate expertise in car maintenance. The symptoms were nearly identical, persistent ABS warning light and compromised vehicle stability. After multiple diagnostic scans, the workshop identified that the lateral sensor was providing incorrect data to the control unit. Initially, they attempted sensor calibration, but ultimately discovered the control unit itself was defective. The complete repair involved: Multiple diagnostic scans to pinpoint the issue, Replacing the affected control unit, Recalibrating the steering angle sensors, Testing the vehicle stability systems Total cost was around 1000 Euro including parts and labor. The repair took about 2 days to complete, but the improvement in handling and safety was immediately noticeable. To provide more specific advice for your case, could you share: Have you noticed any specific driving conditions when the issue becomes more prominent? Were there any events (impact, water exposure, etc.) that preceded the problem? What specific codes did your diagnostic scan reveal? Has the steering angle sensor been checked alongside the lateral sensor?

Thanks for sharing your experience. After my latest service at 71576 KM, I also got multiple diagnostic scans that confirmed the lateral sensor failure. The wheel alignment was verified and is within specs. The issue definitely gets worse during wet conditions, affecting the electronic stability system significantly. The diagnostic showed error code C1112 which points directly to the yaw rate sensor malfunction. No prior incidents or water damage that could have triggered this. My safety warning lights started appearing out of nowhere at first, then became constant. Looking to proceed with the repair since winter is approaching. The quote I received was 850 Euro for parts and labor, seems in line with your experience.

That cost estimate of 850 Euro sounds reasonable based on my repair experience with the Alfa 4C. The error code C1112 matches exactly what I encountered, and wet conditions definitely amplified the stability control issues in my case too. Since your wheel alignment checks out, this reinforces that the lateral sensor is likely the core issue. With my 4C, the mechanic discovered that the sensor malfunction was causing the stability control system to receive incorrect yaw rate data, leading to those unusual safety warning activations you mentioned. The diagnostic scan results showing consistent lateral sensor failure, combined with the specific error code and stability issues in wet conditions, mirror my experience precisely. The fact that the problem developed gradually with unusual warnings before becoming constant is also a typical pattern with this type of sensor degradation. One crucial point, make sure the workshop performs a complete steering angle calibration after replacing the sensor. In my case, skipping this step initially led to lingering stability control issues that required a return visit to fully resolve.

Thanks to everyone who shared their input. I'll move forward with the repair given how similar these experiences are to my situation. The constant safety warnings and compromised vehicle stability are too concerning to ignore, especially with winter weather approaching. My workshop confirmed they will do a complete calibration of both the steering angle sensor and traction control systems after replacing the lateral sensor. Their quoted repair cost of 850 Euro matches what others paid for similar fixes. Will book the repair next week since the electronic stability issues are getting worse in wet conditions. Really appreciate the detailed information about diagnostic scan results and the importance of proper calibration afterward. Having these specific experiences with the same error code C1112 and similar symptoms helps confirm I am making the right decision to address this now rather than wait.
