Almera power steering failure
Summary of the thread
The 2001 Nissan Almera experienced power steering issues, including intermittent failure and steering wheel vibrations. The initial suspicion was a faulty steering angle sensor. After a diagnostic check at a workshop, it was confirmed that the steering angle sensor was indeed defective. The sensor was replaced and recalibrated, resolving the issue.

Did your steering angle sensor issue appear suddenly or gradually? What did you do to diagnose it?

The problem came on gradually. At first, the steering felt heavier sometimes, but it got worse over a few weeks. I had the car scanned at a workshop, and it showed an error code for the steering angle sensor. Given your symptoms and the Almera's mileage, I'd recommend a diagnostic check at a qualified mechanic to confirm if the sensor is the problem.

I took the car to a workshop, and they confirmed the steering angle sensor was defective. The repair, including replacement and recalibration, cost 195€. The issue is resolved now.

I had a similar problem with my 2014 Opel Insignia: stiff steering and vibrations. It turned out to be a faulty steering angle sensor. Have you checked the wheel alignment recently? Misalignment can make it worse.
