Altima EGR Valve Issue

Hi, I'm having a problem with my 2001 Nissan Altima with a gasoline engine. It's got about 81741 km on it. I think the EGR valve is causing issues. I'm getting reduced engine power, the check engine light is on, and there's some smoke when I accelerate. Also, the engine runs rough, fuel consumption is up, and it jerks and hisses when I put my foot down. Does this sound like a defective EGR valve to anyone else?

Summary of the thread

The conversation centers around a 2001 Nissan Altima experiencing reduced engine power, a check engine light, smoke during acceleration, rough running, increased fuel consumption, and hissing sounds. These symptoms suggest a potential issue with the EGR valve, possibly due to blockages or internal defects. Cleaning the valve might offer a temporary fix, but replacement is often necessary for a lasting solution. Seeking professional inspection and repair is recommended to address the problem effectively.

Whoa, that sounds rough! I had a similar experience with my Altima – not sure what year yours is, but mine did the exact same thing, down to the hissing sound. Have you checked the EGR valve itself for blockages or damage? Because those recirculation lines are a pain, and if your engine isn't breathing right, it messes with everything. Have you tried cleaning it, or are you thinking it's totally shot?

Thanks for the quick response! I haven't pulled the EGR valve yet to inspect it, but given all the symptoms, I'm leaning towards it being jammed or defective internally. Before I go tearing things apart, did cleaning the valve fix the issue for you, or did you end up replacing it?

Honestly, I tried cleaning it, but it was a temporary fix at best. The problems came back within a week. I'm no expert, but the hissing and smoke? That sounds like more than just surface gunk. In my case, the valve was definitely toast. Save yourself the headache and get it checked out by a workshop. They'll confirm for sure, but it really sounds like you're describing my nightmare all over again. Don't ignore it like I did for a while, it gets worse!

Appreciate the advice. Sounds like it's best to get it professionally checked out. I'll book it in with a local shop. Turns out it was indeed the EGR valve; repair cost 355€ Thanks again for your help!
