Altima fuel pump cable issue

My 2003 Nissan Altima (gasoline engine) won't start sometimes and stalls at idle. It has 117157 km on it. The check engine light is on, the engine runs rough, and I swear the gas mileage has tanked. My friend read the error memory, and something came up. I'm thinking it might be the fuel pump. Any ideas?

Summary of the thread

A 2003 Nissan Altima is experiencing starting issues, stalling at idle, rough engine performance, and poor fuel economy, with the check engine light on. The problem is suspected to be related to the fuel pump. A suggestion is made to check the fuel pump cable or plug connection, as it is a common issue. Upon inspection and subsequent professional evaluation, the fuel pump cable was found to be defective and was replaced, resolving the issue.

I had similar symptoms on my Altima. Have you checked the cable or plug connection to the fuel pump? It's a common issue. Before condemning the pump itself, I'd give that a look. Is it throwing any specific codes?

Thanks for the tip! I'm not super car savvy. Where exactly IS the fuel pump cable or plug located? And how would I even know if it's defective? What do you mean by 'throwing any specific codes'?

The fuel pump is usually in the fuel tank, accessible from under the rear seat. The connector is right there on top of the pump assembly. Look for any corrosion, loose wires, or damage to the plug itself. By "throwing codes", I mean is the check engine light on, and did your friend get any specific error codes like P0400 or something similar from the ECU when he read the error memory? Honestly, if you're not comfortable with that, it might be best to take it to a workshop.

Thanks a bunch for the info! I wiggled the connector as best as I could, and still nothing, so I decided to take it to the workshop. Turns out the fuel pump cable was indeed defective, like you suggested. They replaced it for 95€ Thanks again!
