Amarok Tailgate Sensor Failure Halts Opening Function

Had the same issue on a 2015 Volkswagen Tiguan. The automatic tailgate would stop midway, triggering a vehicle sensor fault code. The problem turned out to be more than just a failed hall sensor, there was corrosion in the tailgate motor wiring harness connector. The repair involved replacing both the electrical sensor assembly and the wiring harness connecting to the tailgate motor. This is actually a common failure point where moisture can enter the system. Initially thought it was just the hall sensor, but the complete harness replacement was necessary to prevent the issue from recurring. The fix requires removing the tailgate trim panel and testing the connections with specialized diagnostic equipment. Its not a quick fix but definitely something that needs proper attention from a qualified technician since its part of the vehicles safety system. When testing after repair, the automatic tailgate movement was smooth again with no interruptions. This kind of wiring issue often gets worse over time if not addressed properly, best to have it checked thoroughly rather than trying temporary fixes.

Thanks for sharing your experience. Exact same sensor fault happened on my 2018 Amarok last month. After reading about the power tailgate issues online, I went straight to the dealership since the sensor wiring needed specialized equipment to diagnose properly. You are right about the wiring harness, mine also had moisture damage near the tailgate motor connection points. The mechanic mentioned these electrical sensor problems are pretty common in our model years. Did you remember roughly how much you paid for the complete repair? Also curious if youve had any other issues with the tailgate since getting it fixed?

Good to hear you got it checked out. My repair ended up being simpler than expected, the power tailgate issue was resolved by fixing a loose cable connection at the hall sensor. The total cost was just 95€, much less than initially feared when the electrical sensor fault first appeared. The automatic tailgate has worked flawlessly since the repair. No more stopping halfway or sensor errors. The diagnostic showed it was just the connection that needed securing rather than a full wiring harness replacement. Sometimes these issues can be fixed without major parts replacement if caught early. My advice to others facing similar open tailgate problems would be to get it checked promptly by a qualified technician. Quick diagnosis can prevent more extensive damage to the electrical components and keep repair costs lower.

Thanks for all the feedback. After dealing with the sensor fault on my Amarok, I finally got it properly diagnosed and fixed. Took it to a certified mechanic who specializes in electrical issues. The repair cost came to 320€ including parts and labor. They found corroded sensor wiring near the tailgate motor and replaced the entire harness assembly. The mechanic showed me where moisture had damaged the original connections, explaining why the open tailgate feature was acting up. The sensor calibration process took about an hour after installation, but now the power tailgate works perfectly again. No more stopping halfway or error codes. Really glad I didnt try any DIY fixes since the electrical sensor system needed proper diagnostic equipment to repair correctly. Worth every cent to have it done right. Its been 3 months since the fix and zero issues with the automatic tailgate operation. For anyone else facing similar problems, dont wait, getting it checked early definitely saved me from more expensive repairs down the line.
