Thanks for sharing those details about your Tiguan repair. The fault codes and diagnostic trouble process you described sounds very similar to what I am experiencing with my Amarok. Did you notice any difference in the traction control system during this time too? Just got my fault codes read today and the transmission control module is showing similar issues to what you mentioned. Good to know about needing the specialized diagnostic equipment, will definitely look for a shop with proper VW tools. Can you remember roughly how much the total repair cost was for your case? Also curious if you have had any related issues pop up since getting it fixed?

Great news, after getting my Tiguan properly diagnosed and repaired, all the transmission issues were completely resolved. The transfer case limp mode that was originally activated cleared up completely once they addressed the underlying ABS sensor problems. The best part was that since this was traced back to consequential faults from the ABS system, which was under an extended warranty coverage, the total repair cost came to 0€. The diagnostic trouble codes all cleared after the fix and I have not experienced any transmission or traction control problems since then. The key was finding a shop with the right diagnostic equipment to properly identify the root cause. They were able to clear all the transmission control module faults and get everything working smoothly again. The specialized tools made a huge difference in getting an accurate diagnosis versus my previous attempts at other shops. No additional issues have appeared in the 8 months since the repair. The gear selector moves smoothly now and the transmission behavior is back to normal. Would definitely recommend getting it checked out by a qualified shop with proper VW diagnostic capabilities.

Thanks for the feedback. Finally got this sorted out at a certified transmission specialist. Here is what happened: Found a well-reviewed shop specializing in European vehicles that had the proper diagnostic equipment. The initial scan showed multiple transmission control module faults linked to a failing torque converter. The traction control warnings were also triggering intermittently. The mechanic discovered metal particles in the transmission fluid, confirming internal wear. They ended up needing to rebuild the transmission due to damage from running it while the torque converter was failing. The gear selector was also replaced since it showed signs of electrical issues. Total repair cost came to 4200€ including parts and labor. Not cheap, but the transmission now shifts perfectly and all warning lights are gone. The shop provided a 2-year warranty on the rebuild which gives good peace of mind. Big lesson learned about addressing transmission problems early before they cause more extensive damage. The specialized diagnostic equipment and expertise made all the difference in getting to the root cause quickly.

Having experienced similar symptoms with my 2017 VW Tiguan 2.0 TSI, this sounds like a classic case of transmission control module issues combined with ABS sensor faults. The rough shifting and unpredictable behavior triggered limp mode in my case. Initially thought it was just the transfer case, but diagnostic trouble codes revealed multiple consequential faults stemming from a failing ABS wheel sensor that was sending incorrect signals to the transmission control unit. The repair required: Full system diagnostic scan, Replacement of faulty ABS sensor, Recalibration of transmission control module, Software update for the transmission This was a serious repair that took several days to complete properly. The root cause needed to be addressed to prevent the transmission from going into limp home mode again. Most importantly, the shop needed specialized VW diagnostic equipment to properly reset all affected systems. These symptoms should not be ignored as they can lead to more severe transmission damage if left unchecked. Would strongly recommend finding a specialist with proper diagnostic capabilities rather than a general repair shop.
