Thanks! The engine light did come on. As a novice, how would I check the ECU for error codes? Can I do that myself, or do I need special equipment?

You'd need an OBD2 scanner to read the ECU codes. While you could buy one and watch some YouTube videos, it might be a bit daunting. To be honest, with engine control issues, it's usually best to take it to a workshop. They'll diagnose it properly. Don't want to risk further damage.

Thanks. Took it to a workshop, and you were right! It turned out to be corroded battery cable connections causing the engine control unit to malfunction. Cost me 155€ to get it sorted. Appreciate the help!

Sounds frustrating. I had a similar issue with my old Renault Megane. It also wouldn't start. Did the engine light come on? Have you checked the ECU for any error codes? Fuel injection could also be the issue.
