The sound does get a little better when warm. What kind of damage should I look for specifically on the exhaust system? And what exhaust components are you referring to?

Check for any rust, cracks or loose connections. Pay special attention to the area around the exhaust valves and the exhaust flaps themselves. If the noise improves when warm, it really reinforces the idea that the exhaust flap is defective. You should get a professional diagnosis at a workshop. Driving it like this for long might lead to more expensive issues down the line.

Thanks for the advice. Took it to the workshop, and you were right. Defective exhaust flap. Repair cost me 190€. All good now.

Sounds like the exhaust flap is defective, quite common. Does the sound disappear after the engine warms up a bit? Have you checked for any visible damage to the exhaust system? A blocked exhaust could also cause similar symptoms, or even a failure within the exhaust components themselves. You should check that as well.
