Arteon Alarm System Dead: Control Module Failure Guide

My 2018 Arteon security alarm stopped working completely and stored an error code. The immobilizer seems unaffected, but the alarm control module doesnt respond at all. No warning sounds or lights when locking/unlocking. This feels like more than just a false alarm since the system is totally dead. Has anyone dealt with a similar alarm sensor failure? Really interested in hearing what the diagnosis was and what parts needed replacement. Would help to know the typical repair costs and time needed at the shop before I take it in.

This sounds very similar to a battery issue I encountered with my 2016 VW Passat. Having some experience with car electrical systems, I initially thought it was just a false alarm problem, but it turned out the alarm system needed recoding. The symptoms matched exactly what you describe, complete alarm system failure while the immobilizer remained functional. No response from the control module, no warning signals, nothing when locking or unlocking. After checking basic things like fuses, I took it to a workshop. They diagnosed a coding issue where the alarm system was incorrectly set for optical locking signals. The fix required specialized diagnostic equipment to recode the module, costing 45€ and about an hour of labor. Could you share: Have you checked if the key fob battery is working properly? Are there any other electrical issues present? Did this start suddenly or gradually? Which engine variant does your Arteon have? This information would help determine if your issue is similar to what I experienced or if it might be a different problem with the alarm system components.

Had mine serviced just last week at 99897km and they found the anti-theft module needed recoding after checking all physical connections. Like others mentioned, first thought it was just the key fob battery, but the complete silence from the security alarm system pointed to something deeper. The alarm sensor diagnostic showed a communication error between modules. Workshop confirmed no physical damage to wiring or components. My local shop got it sorted in about 2 hours with their VW diagnostic tool. Total repair cost was 95€, much better than replacing the entire alarm control unit. Key was making sure they properly checked both the alarm and immobilizer systems independently to isolate the actual fault.

Thanks for the update on your Arteon's alarm system repair. Interesting to hear it was also a coding issue, just like my Passat case. These communication errors between security modules seem to be a common weak point in our cars from that production period. The diagnostic approach and repair time align perfectly with my experience. The anti-theft system often needs professional recoding when these communication faults occur, even when all physical components are intact. The 95€ repair cost is reasonable, slightly more than what I paid, but still far better than replacing hardware. For anyone else reading with similar car alarm issues: when the entire security alarm goes silent (no chirp, no lights), but the immobilizer still works, its worth having the module coding checked before assuming hardware failure. The alarm sensor and control module communication problems can usually be resolved through software, saving significant repair costs. Have you noticed any other electrical quirks since the repair? My alarm system has been working flawlessly after the recoding, but it took a few days for all functions to settle in completely.

Thanks for the input. Really glad I asked here before assuming the worst about my Arteon's security alarm. After getting it fixed last week, everything has been working perfectly, all warning sounds and lights are back to normal when activating the alarm system. The diagnostic read-out proved what several of you suggested about checking the communication between modules before replacing parts. No alarm sensor issues or false alarms since the recoding was done. The car alarm responds instantly now when locking and unlocking. For anyone searching later with similar symptoms: make sure your shop specifically checks the coding/communication between the alarm control module and other systems. The complete silence from my security system turned out to be fixable without any hardware replacement. Really appreciate the shared experiences, especially about checking the immobilizer function separately. Saved me from potentially unnecessary repairs and kept the cost under 100€. The system has been rock solid since the fix with no electrical gremlins showing up.
