Arteon TSI Transmission Failure After Engine Overheat

Having major transmission issues with my Arteon TSI. The gearbox is acting up with rough shifting and occasional grinding noises. The transmission warning light came on and the car went into limp mode. Suspecting the transmission sensor might be faulty since the shifting problems started after the car overheating problems last month. Mechanic quoted a crazy price but I want to get some second opinions before proceeding. Car details: 2018 model, petrol engine, 98866km. Anyone dealt with similar symptoms? Looking for recommendations on reliable repair shops that know how to handle these automatic transmission problems properly.

Summary of the thread

The Arteon TSI experienced transmission issues, including rough shifting, grinding noises, and a warning light, following an engine overheating incident. The problems were suspected to be linked to a faulty transmission sensor and low transmission fluid levels. A transmission specialist diagnosed and resolved the issues by performing a transmission oil flush, replacing the defective sensor, and resetting the system, avoiding a costly overhaul. Regular fluid level checks were recommended to prevent future issues.

Had the exact same symptoms on a 2015 VW Passat TSI last year. The automatic transmission warning and limp mode are serious signs that should not be ignored. After inspection, the root cause was critically low transmission oil level causing overheating problems. The transmission sensor was giving false readings due to the low fluid condition. This combination of issues can permanently damage the gearbox if left unaddressed. The repair involved: Complete transmission oil flush and refill, Replacement of transmission sensor unit, New transmission filter, Computer system reset and adaptation The gearbox problems were caught early enough to prevent internal damage. However, when transmission issues occur after overheating incidents, internal components can get compromised. The mechanic should check for metal particles in the old transmission oil, this indicates if internal wear has started. Getting this fixed at a specialized transmission shop is crucial. Regular mechanics sometimes miss checking transmission oil levels during routine service, which can lead to these issues. The grinding noise particularly suggests the fluid level dropped below critical points.

Thanks for sharing your Passat experience. I am relieved to hear your transmission repair worked out. Currently facing a similar issue with my Arteon, the gear shifting problems and transmission sensor warnings are almost identical to what you described. Would you mind sharing how much the complete repair cost in your case? Also curious if any other gearbox sensor issues came up since the fix last year? My mechanic suggested a total overhaul but I want to make sure I am not overpaying for unnecessary work. The transmission warning light and rough shifting have me really concerned about potential damage from those overheating problems. Might take it to a transmission specialist as you suggested before making any decisions.

Following up on your questions about costs, my gearbox repairs actually turned out less extensive than initially feared. The transmission specialist diagnosed a faulty transmission oil temperature sensor and critically low transmission oil level as the core issues, which matches your symptoms perfectly. The total came to 365€ including labor, parts, and transmission oil top-up. Since having the automatic transmission sensor replaced and oil levels corrected, the gearbox has performed flawlessly with no warning lights or shifting problems. No additional gearbox sensor issues have surfaced in the past year. The grinding noise and rough shifting completely disappeared after the repair. Getting it fixed early prevented what could have become much costlier internal transmission damage. A full overhaul seems excessive if your symptoms match what I experienced. Would recommend getting a second opinion from a transmission specialist who can properly diagnose if there is actual internal damage. The overheating problems can certainly affect transmission components, but sometimes the fix is more straightforward than expected.

Just got back from the transmission specialist, turns out my Arteon's transmission issues were not as severe as initially feared. The gear shifting problems were mainly caused by low transmission fluid and a defective transmission sensor, similar to what you experienced. The specialist found the overheating problems from last month had triggered the faulty sensor readings, but luckily caught it before any serious internal damage occurred. They performed a complete transmission oil flush, replaced the problematic sensor, and did a system reset. Total cost came to 420€, significantly less than the 1200€ overhaul my regular mechanic quoted. The grinding noise has completely disappeared and the gearbox is shifting smoothly again. No more warning lights or limp mode issues. Really glad I got that second opinion before agreeing to the full transmission rebuild. The transmission specialist mentioned regular fluid level checks could have prevented these issues. Will definitely keep a closer eye on that during future services.
