Astra Alarm Chaos: Faulty Tilt Sensor Drives Owner Mad
Summary of the thread
A 2016 Vauxhall Astra owner is experiencing random alarm triggers, suspected to be caused by a faulty tilt sensor. A similar issue was resolved in another Vauxhall by replacing faulty sensors and addressing corroded wiring, costing around £250. The suggested solution is to have a mechanic inspect and potentially replace the sensors and clean any corroded connections, which should resolve the problem in a single garage visit.

Hi! Thanks for sharing your experience. My Astra's at 280404 KM and just had its service last month. Mine's actually going off totally unusual, sometimes in the middle of the night, sometimes during the day, no real pattern. Usually happens 2-3 times a week. It's really starting to drive my neighbors crazy! £250 doesn't sound too bad if it sorts the problem out completely. Did your mechanic say anything about potential issues with the battery or wiring that might cause this? I'm trying to avoid multiple garage visits if I can help it.

Hey again! Yeah, I totally get your frustration with those unusual alarms, been there! Actually, when I had my Insignia checked, the mechanic did mention that while battery issues can trigger false alarms, in my case (and probably yours too), it wasn't the battery since it was going off out of nowhere like yours. From my experience, if it was a battery problem, you'd usually see other electrical issues too, like slow starting or dimming lights. Since you're not mentioning any of these and your pattern sounds exactly like what I dealt with, I'm pretty confident it's the sensors. Just a heads up, when they fixed mine, they actually found that some wiring near the sensor had gotten a bit corroded over time, which was causing the false triggers. My mechanic said this is pretty common in Vauxhalls of our age, especially with higher mileage like yours. They cleaned up the connections while they were in there, which was included in that £250 I mentioned. One trip to the garage should sort it, just make sure to mention the unusual timing of the alarms and that there's no pattern. That really helped my mechanic narrow it down quickly. Let me know how it goes!

Thanks so much for all that detailed info! That's really helpful, especially about the corrosion, makes total sense with the age and mileage of my car. You've honestly made me feel a lot better about this whole situation. I'm going to book it in at my local Vauxhall garage tomorrow and make sure to mention everything you've said about the sensors and wiring. Really appreciate you taking the time to share your experience, fingers crossed I can get this sorted as easily as you did! I'll definitely let you know how it goes once it's fixed. Thanks again!

Hey there! I had a really similar issue with my 2018 Vauxhall Insignia diesel (low experience with cars here). Super annoying when these alarm problems pop up! Had the same unusual alarm triggers, and it turned out to be faulty sensors in the alarm system. Took it to my local workshop, they diagnosed and replaced some sensors, cost me around 250€ to fix. Haven't had any issues since then, thankfully! What year and engine variant is your Astra specifically? Also, does your alarm go off at specific times or completely unusual? This info might help pinpoint if it's the same issue I had.
