Astra Diesel Particulate Filter Issue

My 2008 Vauxhall Astra diesel is giving me grief. It's got 166913 km on the clock. Lately, it's been seriously down on power, and belching out smoke when I try to accelerate. Suspect it's the dreaded diesel particulate filter. Anyone else had this? Engine light is on too of course.

Sounds familiar. Had similar symptoms with my old Peugeot, though mine was petrol. Engine light, power loss... Have you tried forcing a regeneration? Might be worth a vehicle inspection before you go replacing the whole filter.

Forcing a regeneration? How exactly do I do that? And what am I looking for in a vehicle inspection? Want to be somewhat informed before a workshop visit.

Some cars let you initiate a regeneration through the dashboard if the conditions are right. Check your manual, or search online. If that doesn't work the filter is likely toast. Had to get mine replaced on the Peugeot. Vehicle inspection will just confirm the filter is gone - they'll likely recommend replacement anyway. Get a quote first - diesel filters ain't cheap.

Workshop confirmed DPF is shot. Quoted 1550€ for a new filter fitted. Bit the bullet and got it done. Back on the road now, no smoke, and power restored. Thanks for the advice!
