Astra EGR Valve Issues

Right, I'm at my wit's end with my 2009 Vauxhall Astra, diesel engine. The car’s been acting up something awful. I'm getting seriously reduced engine power, the check engine light is mocking me from the dash, and it's belching out smoke when I try to accelerate. As if that wasn't enough, the engine's running rough, my fuel consumption is through the roof, and the whole car jerks like a kangaroo on a trampoline when I put my foot down. Oh, and there's this loud hissing sound when accelerating, which is just the cherry on top of this disaster. Mileage is at 62064 km. I'm suspecting the EGR valve, but I'm no mechanic. Has anyone else had similar?

Sounds familiar. I had similar symptoms on my Astra. Check engine light, rough running, loss of power… drove me nuts. Have you had the car scanned for error codes? A faulty EGR valve can cause all those problems, especially with those symptoms.

I did have it scanned, and it pointed towards the EGR valve. Just wanted to see if others have had similar experiences before I drop a load of money on a new one. Was it definitely the EGR valve in your case? And how did you confirm it?

Yep, EGR valve was the culprit. I tried cleaning it first, but it was too far gone. Eventually had to replace it. Given your symptoms and the error code, it’s highly likely that’s your problem too. Get it checked by a mechanic for a definitive diagnosis, but I'd bet money on it. I ended up paying 355€ to get it sorted.

Thanks for the info! It's a relief to know I'm not alone in this Astra nightmare. I've booked it in at the local garage. Turns out the EGR valve was indeed jammed solid. New valve fitted, and she's running like a dream again!
