Thanks, I haven't checked the relay and wiring harness yet. Can you explain what tests or observations helped you find the relay problem? Any advice is appreciated.

It's like a faulty switch. Sometimes it works, sometimes it doesn't. The mechanic used a multimeter to check the voltage at the fuel pump when the car wouldn't start. No power. Then he bypassed the relay, and the pump worked. That confirmed the relay was the issue. Check the basics before replacing the pump. But with those error codes and fuel consumption, a workshop diagnostic might save time. They can use a proper diagnostic tool to pinpoint the problem.

Thanks for the explanation. I'll get a professional diagnostic at a workshop. The repair cost is about 95€.

Sounds familiar! I had similar issues with my old Volvo V70. Same symptoms – sputtering, check engine light, and awful fuel consumption. Turned out to be a dodgy fuel pump relay. Have you checked the relay and the wiring harness leading to the fuel pump? Sometimes it's not the pump but electrical issues.
