Atos NOx catalyst error and exhaust leak

Hey, I'm having a bit of a nightmare with my 2010 Hyundai Atos, it's got a gasoline engine. The check engine light is on, and it's showing an error related to the NOx storage catalyst aging. It also seems like there's a bit of an exhaust leak, which I can definitely smell. The car has done 61131 km. Could a leak in the exhaust system cause this NOx error? I'm not sure what to do next!

Summary of the thread

A 2010 Hyundai Atos with a gasoline engine is experiencing a check engine light due to a NOx storage catalyst aging error and an exhaust leak. The exhaust leak could be causing the NOx error, as leaks can disrupt emissions readings. It is suggested to inspect the exhaust system, particularly the flex pipe and welds around the catalytic converter, for leaks. Professional diagnosis and repair are recommended to accurately identify and fix the issue, as DIY repairs may not fully resolve the problem.

I had a similar issue with my Atos. The NOx catalyst errors often pop up when there are exhaust leaks. Check all the joints and connections in your exhaust system, especially near the catalyst. It might be a small crack or a loose clamp. A leak throws off the emissions readings, triggering the error.

Thanks for the tip! Where exactly should I be looking for these leaks? Is there a common spot on the Atos where they tend to occur? And if it is a leak, is it something I could potentially fix myself, or is it best left to a professional?

The flex pipe and the welds around the catalytic converter are common failure points. Given the NOx catalyst error and the exhaust leak, a professional diagnosis is recommended. A workshop has the tools to properly identify and address the leak. DIY repairs can be tricky and might not fully resolve the issue, potentially causing further problems down the line.

Thanks a lot for your help! I took it to a workshop as you suggested. Turns out there was a crack in the exhaust manifold, causing the leak. They replaced it, and that seems to have fixed everything, cost me about 265€. The check engine light is off, and the error is gone. Really appreciate your advice!
